I am transferring this summer to UCI as an economics major and was planning on doing my pre-meds as well. I talked to the social sciences counselors and they said I shouldn't have any problems.

The problem is that UCI only lets Bio-related majors register for Bio-related classes (I can understand why...they fill up quickly).

They used to have a message saying non-bio majors needed to wait til THE FIRST WEEK of the quarter for any openings...but they don't even have that anymore. I don't think I will get a spot.

I really want to do my pre-meds...preferably in 2 years. What are my options?

Thanks for any help.

Try local cc if you can’t get them

First of all, UC’s aren’t premed-friendly (lower med school acceptance rate compared to that of other schools).
Additionally, in order to become a biology major, you must have completed:
-1 year of general biology
-1 year of general chemistry
-1 year of organic chemistry
-1 year of physics (applied calculus)
-calculus 1 & 2
If you don’t have those completed, UC’s probably won’t let you change your major to a science major.

Local community colleges don’t offer upper division classes offered at a 4 year university.
You should have planned your college career as premed 2 years ago, then you wouldn’t have this problem.

I don’t want to change my major, Edmfanatiq. I want to complete my pre-med (classes that qualify me to attend medical school) classes. I was told the restriction in enrolling into a bio class will be lifted for non- bio majors a couple days before the quarter starts…unfortunately the classes are filled. I need an alternative.

I was planning on doing this route too with a anthro major, but i didnt go to UCI. I have friends there too who were telling me the same info about the predicament you are in and advised me not to do it. I would talk to the counselors, there has to be some sort of waitlist or something. Maybe you can get priority registration or something if you join a team etc, that is a possibility.

try posting here: [Pre-Medical Forums | Student Doctor Network](http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/forumdisplay.php?f=5)

let me know what happens, i am in a similar route, a social science major trying to go pre-med. It’s too early for me to know, but I might be in the same problem as you in winter.
need to figure this out asap

Well, the courses I’ve listed are the main requirements but you also need upper division classes such as advanced organic chem, biophysical chem, general genetics, biochem etc… to fulfill premed requirements.
UC’s also require you to graduate within 2 years of transfer so you’ll have a tight frame.
Premed is not a major so you won’t be considered double major and be given extra semester or quarters to fulfill graduation requirements. It would be more acceptable to major in a nonscience major at a private school than at a UC because privates are more lenient on graduation and course offerings.

This is what I need for UCI Premed (Quarter System):

1.5 years Biology: BIO93, BIO94, BIO100LW, BIO97, BIO98 (20 quarter units)
1 year of General Chemistry with labs. (12 quarter units)
1 year of Organic Chemistry with labs. (12 quarter units)
1 year of Physics with labs. (12 quarter units)
Calculus (done)
Statistics (4 quarter units)

60 additional quarter units…

I have about 44 quarter units of econ left…

not a piece of cake but doable over 6+1 summer (outta 2?) quarters ~ 15 units per quarter.

They are going to lift the non-bio major restrictions on sept. 18 I think. I gotta get at least a GEN CHEM class if not BIO. That would put me at 16 units this quarter…

Oh, then you should be able to knock it off. Ask your counselor if you can take gen ochem, gen chem or gen bio at a local community college to get credit or not.

Actually all the pre med requirements are lower divsion, there is no upper division requirements.

^^im pretty sure they are correct. There has to be some room for you, dont the rooms hold like 400 students or something lol

The problem about doing pre-med at UCI is the bio labs. Almost all medical schools require 1 year of bio WITH LAB. The lower division classes 93-99, do not have labs associated with them. All of the bio labs at UCI require you take the associated upper division bio class in order to take them. So most likely you have to go through 93-99 + upper division classes + bio labs in order to fulfill the lab requirement for medical school. However there are some UD bio classes with lab that you can take without exactly finishing up to bio 99.

^^community college for lab?

To the OP,

There’s these things called Add/Drop Cards. As long as you can get the Prof’s signature, you CAN be added to ANY class (even if its full/you’re not a bio major). Go ask around for it.

However, most Prof’s get swamped with these during the first week (many won’t sign them at all!), I suggest you talk to your academic advisor first, then attend the bio/pre-med class you want to do to. Go talk to that Prof (either after class, if possible/the earliest office hours possible in term). Explain the situation to them nicely and hopefully they can pull some strings for you. I hope that helps! Be patient, I don’t suggest emailing them b.c they will probably be super busy.

Thanks for the help.

I did not know that the 93-99 Bio classes did not have Labs…Would BIO100LW, a 4 unit Lab Lecture with its corresponding Lab cover it?

Am I really limited to 2 years at UCI? I thought that Financial Aid would be the only thing hindering me from staying an additional year. I really want to cover BioChem, since it’s on the MCATs and certain med schools require it.

I need to talk to a counselor LOL.

@Samsizzle

The classes aren’t entirely full, but they are desperately sought after and post-Bio preference has left only a handful of spots in both CHEM and BIO…the two most time sensitive courses.

hmmm yeah try that add/card someone was talking about. Yeah uci is known for their bio program so i wouldnt doubt that they are filled to the brim with science students. let us know what you decide to do!

Spots were open…Sept. 18 2nd round of registration…social sciences counselor said restrictions would be lifted…RESTRICTION AGAINST NON-BIO MAJORS NOT LIFTED…ARRGHGHHHHHH

WebReg wouldn’t let me enroll neither in Chemistry nor in Biology when there were spots open. EXTREMELY DISHEARTENING.

I have to actually wait for the class to start to register.

I guess my only hope is the Add Card B.S or if the 3 spots that are still empty, remain empty til instruction begins.

Could someone please confirm the 2 year restriction for transfer students to complete their Pre-Meds? I’ve heard such things about UCB, but not about UCI.

I’ve been reading your posts on taking premed requirements and I’m in the same squeeze as well. I will be transferring to UCI in the fall and I hope I can get into ochem. The chemistry department website says that nonmajors are welcome to attend the first week of lecture in order to be added. It also says the restrictions should be lifted. However, I’m enrolling for ochem at the community college I’m at right now just in case. You can use community college coursework to fulfill premed requirements, since it’s not counting towards your major anyway. However, the only problem will be getting into biochem when the time comes…My friend suggesting minoring in a science like physical science or public health to get into the classes. But it seems like too much work on top of everything else. I think it’s unreasonable for them to bar our students from taking these classes.

I have a friend doing something similar except she is a world studies major (I think) and doing pre-med at UCSD.
