Hi, my son is a student at an east coast university, but will be spending about two months at USC this summer. We were wondering where the closest Target, Walmart and grocery stores are located? (He'll have access to a car, so it doesn't have to be within walking distance.)

Target just opened a few months ago downtown at FIGat7th about 3 miles north of campus. Walmart is about 3.5 miles west at the Crenshaw plaza which is fine during the day but sketchy at night.

There’s a Fresh and Easy Express market right across the street from campus–easy walk. With a car, there is excellent shopping near The Grove/Farmers Market. He can celebrity-watch while he shops.

Thanks for all of the replies! Good to know that grocery stores are close by and that he has some options. Thanks for the info. on Target and Walmart - great to get some input on the neighborhoods they are in as well, since he’s not familiar with the area. Thanks again, he’s looking forward to his time there!

I’ve never been to Walmart but there are tons of Targets in the area! Two in WeHo (one JUST opened near The Grove), one downtown (Figueroa & 7th), and one that I usually go to that’s a few blocks west of campus (I think it’s the closest). There’s tons of stuff nearby.

Grocery stores:
Smart & Final at Vermont & Jefferson
Superior Grocers at Jefferson & McClintock (University Village)
Fresh and Easy at Gateway (Figueroa & Jefferson)
CVS at Gateway (Figueroa & 30th)
Ralphs (Vermont & Adams) - the most popular, I think
Fresh and Easy - a few blocks east of campus

I don’t think there are any Vons nearby, but there are TONS of Ralphs in the surrounding area (I can think of like 3-4) so it’s worth it to get a Ralph’s card and just shop there.

I have a son there, an almost daily shopper at Ralphs. As an athlete he makes a lot of his own food, very picky on his diet, etc. So yes, Ralphs at Vermont and Adams is great and they tend to stock like a Target with a pretty decent household aisle, with hangers, hooks and hardware. Toiletries - good selection. However, contrary to what may be stated, Target and Walmart are no where near campus in terms of being practical to get there if you don’t have a car. And typically those are stock up stores where carrying or hauling on a bike isn’t the way to go. After awhile they will know someone with a car and it will work out. I heard Clemson has shuttles that take the college kids to Target on Sunday nights at 10pm - after the store is closed, they open it just for the students…how cool is that?! No such luxury at USC.

One suggestion I have is opening an Amazon Prime account. I pay for a family membership $79 annually (for four separate family members to use) but my son told me college students get it for free - I assume with the hope they continue it after they graduate. It is fab -pay the $79 and everything ships free with 2 day shipping! It is there so fast! I keep my credit card on the account with sons address stored and he can go in and get what he needs (within reason of course!) and I don’t have to worry about him going out in sketch neighborhood for whatever.

Hi CADREAMIN, thanks for the heads-up on the household items at Ralph’s - my son will need to stock up when he arrives, so that was very helpful! Thanks for the Amazon Prime idea too.

Amazon prime is $39/year for students with an .edu email address (it used to be free for a year then free for 6 months but now you have to pay I guess, I think there is a 30 day free trial somewhere on amazon).

Ya smiller, I realize where Clemson in, my best friends daughter attends there and she mentioned her doing it on more than one occasion…either way cool idea. Shopping around USC is really limited and sketchy, at least if walking/biking. When they build the new University Plaza thing that will help, but it is a ways off.
