Tasp 2007

haha, my rankings might change a bit, now that i think about it. but thanks for posting them, passion and daenerys.

and don't worry, i'm not 100% done with any of my essays yet, dandelion. almost done with the conflict, but i don't like the direction that one is going so i might change the entire thing.

AHHHHH! ok so im one of the lurkersthat you guys were talking about...
i read almost every entry (except the ones about california cause i live in MI =D)
anyways, im done with my political essay thing...its on the death penalty..
but my critical analysis sounds EXACTLY like a school essay (but its not!)
i wrote in on how point of view affects the growth and stuff of the main character in The Lords of Discipline (anyone read it?)
but i guess its just like wrong..completely...
anyone want to read it for me?! pretty please with a TASP admissions letter on top ;-)?
I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT!
thanks!

Dandelion welcome back I noticed your prolonged absence. I think Last Night was a crazy feverous rush as it was the last day of break for most.

Oreo...I would read your essay as it interesting however I have 2 Finals tomorrow (God I need to get off this board.) My advice is step back and take a very subjective look at it. Right now your saying its "wrong" but you arent writing a book report your writing an analysis so there is no techincal wrong answer, just have a strong asertive argument. Also when saying it is just like a school essay I take it is very formal. Not that is a bad thing but let some of your personality makes it way into to the piece.

As far as proof reading it goes; I would NOT have someone read it on here. Not to discredit CC opinons or anything like that but:
First: The truth is nobody knows what there talking about on here, even previous TASPers, The whole admissions process is a complete mystery to all and just because something worked for someone it doesnt work for all. So no one on here will have any make or break discovery on the essay that will allow you to get into TASP. What im trying to say is although there are great people on here this is your competition your trying to seperate yourself from the pack and if everyone starts having this giant essay orgy and everyone is reading eachothers and slowly they all end up seeming sort of similiar.
Second: Many people on here have read past TASP essays and if they were to read your essay they most likely would use one of the essays they have read as some sort of rubric. And back to above there is no true rubric and trying to find a means of static judgement will hurt you in the end.

My opinon is to solicit an outside source for proofreading. Ask a parent or a teacher. Well actually instead of proofreading persay walk through the essay with them have a discussion about it, not only will this help spark new ideas and how to strengthen current ideas it will be great prep for the interview. Also I know the deadline is soon but right now worry about content, if you have someone just proofreading you might get a few gramatical corrections and simple scentence restructuring not much more. These essays are the basis of the admittance and as long as you have strong ideas and assertations, the improper use of a semi-colon isnt gonna be the end all be all.

Im sorry if i came off a bit salty, that wasnt my intention. I love this board because its so social and sort a breath of fresh air compare to my school full of reguritating lexicons who cant even asert themselves. And I believe if you were ment for this program you will get in and as good as it is to have people to answer questions on here anything more then that has gone overboard. Example Aidism and its many followers. Be your ****ing self. :-D

Ugh the boards were down for so long. I wrote this about 5 hours ago now.

hahaha..thanks giantredlobster...
very enlightening =D.
I actually asked (more like forced) my big brother to read it and proofread and everything and he said everything was fine...So it's alll gooood =).
4 down 2 to go!

OK, so I'm done with first draft of conflict (still needs majjjoooor help) and my books list. nothing else though.

whooooo!

anyone want to start posting booklists? I'll post mine in a couple of hours after i finnish writing it lol

Amen.

Anyway, I see where people would like to see bits of a critical analysis, but the other essays are PERSONAL ESSAYS. So just chill out and do what comes naturally to you.

Copy/pasting what I sent another CCer:

Check out page 38; I posted a bit of my critical analysis on there.

But really, just be yourself and you'll be fine. I do think CCers might just start using my essays as a rubric and, really, that's not the point. The point is be yourself, write however you want to write, keeping in mind the same things we've been repeating over and over: be passionate, honest, and clear...talk about what interests you, show your intelligence and creativity, and just relax.

P.S. - Proofreading is another thing entirely, though, GRLobster. Proofreading involves checking grammar, structure, spelling, and coherence, so anyone intelligent can do that. A good proofreader doesn't change the essay to fit "what they like". So, in that case, TASPers and other CCers are perfectly capable of proofreading.

hehe, Lobster... salty.

whoo, CC was down for awhile. anyways, i haven't been able to work on my essays at all because of the massive amounts of work this week, but i'm going to start working today.

so far, my conflict analysis is almost done, my booklist is done, and my future goals is half done. the conflict analysis and the future goals ones both exceed the limit (by like, half a page, and i only did half of the future goals so far).

uh... lol.

and yeah, i agree with aida. proofreading shouldn't be too much of a problem, since (i hope) everyone knows correct grammar, and it's not so much a matter of editing for content as it is for small mistakes, sentence structure, etc. however, keep in mind that by giving your essays to someone to edit, that person can easily remember parts of your essays, your wording and your ideas, and incorporate them into their own. so be careful with sharing your essays with 8934879324 other people on CC.

that is all =) happy friday! thank god.

Muse...Roamorse:

I totally agree with you. I know I talked with Aida about how my post was a little extreme and how I in some ways I misused the word proofreading and sort of went on a tangent. and I understand and agree with both of you. But my underlying point still comes down to what Roamorse reiterated, just be careful when you share your essays.

Amen to fridays!
P.s. I really want to see FreedomWriters tonight. Anyone see it yet?

I was at the premiere lol. It's not bad. BTW any previous TASPers want to read my global issue essay? It's short and sweet. Still a rough draft. Done via a extended analogy (though not a good one).

Haha go figure.

Okay, I'm officially super-nervous about TASP again. I just began my literary analysis essay and I'm stuck because I have no idea what level it's supposed to be on. I know what I'm writing about and everything but I haven't the faintest idea about the level.

I would really love it if a kind former TASPer could e-mail me any one of their essays so I could just see the quality and the format. I would just hate to put so much time and effort and worry into this thing without having any idea about my chances.

Thanks a lot.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=249554&page=38

there's an excerpt from a literary analysis on that page.

Yeah ANY PMs or e-mails from former TASPers would be great. You can AIM me at KenMaester792 or e-mail directorscut7@yahoo.com.

:)

Haldar. The reason why they don't specify what kind of essay format, style ect. I sbecause they aren't looking for a certain type. Just write an essay that is inteligent assertive and represents and supports who you are. When past TASPers were writing their essays they had no idea what style they were suppose to write, but somehow they got in. You could make the argument that people who make it all had the perfect essays exactly how they (being Telluride) want them. But my guess is Musechick and Vegangril (2 past TASPers on here, many refer to them as demigods) have completely different personalities and that is relfected in their writing style.

Pretty much you can take 2 paths, you can write formal or you can write it more informal and personal. Pick one that best fits, such as if your topic strongly relates to you, you can write a more personal essay. ect.

Bottom Line: (lol why isnt this the only thing i write) If you were to take 10 past essays, they would all be different styles, and format.

Also on the note of quality, your applying to arguably the most prestigious summer program in the country. ;-)

to all applicants: you shouldn't ask to see other people's essays. you shouldn't need it. Do YOUR best without trying to gauge what is expected of you. have a parent or teacher or friend edit it, yes, but don't waste your time reading past essays. it isn't a waste of your time to apply just because you're unsure of your chances.

advice: write about what you care about. this'll make an interview a lot better. and they care a LOT more about your interview and essays than your grades.

ps-TASP is amazing, and all of you who get in are going to adore it to death.

^^^^Lol make me look like a verbose prick.

Wait so you a past TASPer. can you pm your essays. ;-)

All of you are like sharks! Write your own essays!

yes, I'm a past TASPer.

maybe I shouldn't have said that. let me just go on the record saying I won't edit essays or let you read mine. I can answer general questions, let you know what I thought about different aspects of the program, etc. And let me reiterate that TASP is amazing.
