Tasp 2007

Lol you know I was joking right? Haha, you emobody everything in which I believe. Sorry if you didn't get that.

Wait so for real: Which TASP you go to?

don't worry, I got it. I'm a sarcasm fiend.

I went to washu tasp 06 with the lovely vegangirl :)

Ooh.. Completely unrelated but this years WashU looks really interesting, im applying to TASS though

bre -

do you know how the committee decides to place you in a particular seminar?

(i mean, besides the essay...for instance, some people got in their 2nd choice but not their first..it seems kind of arbitrary since it's not exacly first-come-first-serve is it?)

There's no formula, but there are a lot of factors that go into deciding, like ensuring diversity in each TASP and how much your essays would seem to indicate interest / success in a certain TASP, how many people listed a certain seminar as their 1st choice, etc.

I do think they try to get the most qualified people in, so rating a seminar as your first choice along with half the applicant pool probably won't hurt you. This is also why some people ending up getting a lower choice. (the lowest I've heard is the 3rd choice.) You should also be aware that TASP can be amazing even if you aren't terribly fond of the seminar topic you get.

can we do an analysis of a work that is a collection of poetry?

you should use the email contact info they provide to ask for sure, but I think a poem is fine. I'm not sure about an entire collection--I think that might be too broad.

hey guys i finally finished my critical analysis :D

hey bre, do i have to attach the original piece that im analyzing to my paper?

hopefully the readers can google the text and read it themselves?

I have a question regarding the critical analysis. The prompt is as follows

"Write a critical analysis of a book, poem, play, essay, or other text you have read outside of school."

What about a critical analysis of a film? I understand it is not a traditional "text", but it is to me.

Btw, the subject I am thinking about is either Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey or Kielowski's Dekalog. Kurosawa's Rashoman would be fun as well.

If you have specific questions on what you can do it on, use the email contact. They'll actually know.

You shouldn't need to attach the original piece of work.

thx bre

man im so excited about this whole thing

heart thuds

:D

the whole best part out of this thing, for me, would be conversing with new ppl <3

yet another lurker has joined the thread!

yes, so. i had just heard of TASP and i began my app no more than 3 days ago. three weeks of sleep depravation and pure stress lie ahead i guess. :)

anyway, i have a couple questions.
1. how long are your essays about your "plans and objectives for future education"? i just elaborate on why college is important to me (i can't choose a field to possibly major in--too hard!!!) and i can estimate it to be about one page single spaced...

is 1984 or Animal Farm too "common" a book to analyze? i happen to enjoy both a lot.

did you guys literally LIST essay #5?

thanks for your time and good luck to everyone applying. :D

mines like 1.25 pages, dun think it matters that much

as long as its insightful youre fine

i just listed, no explanations

lol

:]

It should say so on the application. Don't worry about not having a field to major in; I didn't either. However, do talk about the things you are most passionate about. Don't say "Oh, teehee, everythiiiing!" Be more specific, and if you DO say everything, be prepared to back it up because they will probably ask. ;P

Do it, don't worry. Just be insightful, like p45510n said.

I just listed, didn't even put the authors. However, if you can, sure, include the authors. Why not? ^_^

woah you guys are quick.

yeah, i have a few areas that i'm interested in, but no definite ONE that i can choose, somewhere around three or four. should i just elaborate on each? and i have an oddball one (become a professional juggler) that would be pretty hard to justify. :)

thanks again!

Oh sure, elaborate on each. ^_^ Or really, however you want to put it. It's up to you. TOTALLY mention the professional juggler one, lol, that sounds awesome.

ahh musechick, your college applications done ?

we cut short our aim convo last time b/c i know you are busy :]

and i think im one of the few who has not looked at your essays :D

i finished mine, im soooo excited, simply cuz i loved what im writing about

esp my objectives for education one, i made that one so silly xDD

i reaaaallllyyy hope they give me a chance to discuss such stuff with them at the interviews crosses fingers

Onetime:

I think i answered most of your questions a couple pages back (along with some others). I've copy/pasted them here:

YES, that poem/novel/essay/picture book/postmodernist apocalyptic love story you want to do your literary analysis on, it's fine.

YES, it's okay if your grades aren't perfect, your PSAT score isn't off the chart, and you're not president of ten clubs.

YES, your 1.5 page essay is an appropriate length. You won't be rejected because each of your essays aren't exactly two pages.

YES, the way you've listed/ranked the seminars, formatted your booklist, or written in your critical info on the app, it's OKAY. These things will not get you in or keep you out.

And finally:

YES, it's a bad idea to apply to TASP because you think it will help you get into college (and by a bad idea i just mean a waste of your time and Telluride's. you won't be accepted)

P.S.- Breanna is my hero. That is all.

Whoa I feel like I'm missing out even when I'm only 2 pages behind. Haha. I think I'm going to become much less active on this thread as school starts up again (I'm still on break; I go back to school on Monday). But hey, the deadline's growing closer and closer and I'm sure I'll get my TASP-obsessed self on here enough to read a bit of this thread. Best of luck to all of my fellow applicants. It's also definitely good to see some new faces on here.

Oh and I would have to agree that the people are what I'm looking forward to the most if I were to be accepted. :D

Heh I still have to do my literary analysis (I'm doing my application in reverse order) and I was CONSIDERING writing about one of the popular titles listed above. Ehhh.

I'm starting to wonder when I'll have time to work on back up summer program applications. Meh.

For the literary analysis, can I analyse two novels because for what I have in mind I am essentially either going to be comparing and contrasting to cement my argument or, at least, referencing one of the novels to elaborate on the other?
