Mine are pretty short too.

dandelion--yes, there's a certain disadvantage that in the less you write, the less the readers will get to see of you and your writing style. Also, if they're short because they don't have enough examples or support, it'll weaken your argument. However, I'd argue that having a 1 page essay on a 2 page limit is a lot better than a 3 page essay on a 2 page limit. You can always expand.

haha, I was checking on here during school as well. This is just about the ONLY good site that the administration hasn't banned :p

I don't think they could properly justify banning a site like this. Seriously, what are they going to say, "You shouldn't be thinking about college while you're at school!" ??

sighs CC is awesome. Thanks for the support.

Hearts for everyone!

<3 <3 <3 <3 <3

vegangirl, I sympathize with you and hope people stop badgering you. But there are a lot of people on CC like that... and did you post your request up two or three times.

crosses fingers for TASP

I read Bre's post about the job of essays being to inform the reader about the writer.

distraught sigh

I'm worried that my essays may not reveal enough about 'me'. I mean, I havn't written anything about my extra-curricular activities or anything. One essay discusses the culture I come from, and another is about one of my hobbies (butit isn't mentioned on the form part of the application). My essays do reveal my writing style, but is that enough?

I think that writing style is what they're mainly looking for. You can tell alot by the way somebody writes.

Also, the topics you choose reflect you ALOT. Especially your future goals one, and your issue/topic one. And your book list.

I would think that's enough (but then again, I'm no pro. I, like you, am an applicant) I think it'd be stupid to "insert" stuff to reveal yourself. You're already revealing alot about yourself - I think they want to know YOU, not necessarily what you do.

On a happier note, Harvard sent me summer school stuff :P Not that I'm going (like $5000!) but my mom was happy. "Jenny, Harvard wants you!" I'm like...yeah, Mom, that's right. Harvard wants me :P Anyway, now she's happy and somewhat off my back :)

if it reveals your culture, that should be fine. give it to one or your friends or a teacher and ask them if the essay shows who you are, what you're interested in, your personality, your thought process, etc. i didn't write about any of my hobbies either, except for the future plans one in which i briefly mentioned something i love doing.

and yeah, since the old taspers have been so helpful already and answered all our repetitive questions over and over again, i think it would be nice for us to leave them alone. i can't speak for everyone, of course, and i'm sorry if it offends anyone. just do your best and concentrate on your essays. everyone's style/preferences/situation is different, so besides getting a feel for what level you should be at, there's no real use in reading other peoples' essays.

lol, my pm box is maxed out and i keep deleting old messages to find new ones, ...asking to read my essays. lol. uh. i got four pm's so far from people who wanted to read mine.

clarification: i'm not an old tasper. same boat as you guys. sorry for the confusion. and my essays are not done/in the revision stage... so...

maybe we'll all have a massive essay orgy (lol, giantredlobster) when all this is done.

I wasn't implying that you should talk about your ec's or everything about your life, or even you. I just mean (and tako said this) that what you choose says a lot about you, and the more you write, the more they can understand your point of view, where you're coming from, and how you think, which are very big parts of who you are as a person.

essays about your culture and a hobby sound just fine.

I said this in a pm and I'll say it again now: I think the most important essay you write is the issues one. What you choose says a lot. How you approach your topic says a lot. My advice? choose something you care about, and say what you want to say. support your ideas with valid evidence or examples.

PS--on having an essay orgy, I strongly discourage it. Remember that whatever you post on the forum can be read in the future, meaning that future applicants will get to read your essays. Sounds great to you, doesn't it? It's not. It'll be people who need ideas that read the essays in the orgy, and yeah, it's nice to see other people's, but it'll eventually result in people feeling like all the topics have been covered, or in people submitting strikingly similar essays. Also, I think people would be tempted to copy your essays completely and turn them in for school assignments. Not groovy.

Be VERY cautious about posting essays on a public forum.

my issue essay is basically my interpretation of a common practice (life event?) and how i was brought up to view it.

then i discussed a particular situation in which my perspective changed.

it's a very personal essay, and i approached it the same one i approached the conflict essay (anecdotal) and tied it back to myself.

oh, lol, i was kidding about the essay orgy part. i agree with you and i'm aware of how detrimental it is to post tasp essays, or any essays, on a public forum.

although i wouldn't mind sharing it with individual people, if i like you and decide that you're cool.

lmao.

Lol. I would like to read essays, but I know I shouldn't. I need to find my own inspiration WOOT. Less than a week to find inspiration for conflict + issues + ranking. (I know the ranks, I don't know why I ranked them -___-)

I keep on thinking how awkward this thread'll be when everybody here makes it and I don't.

I'll have to say "Congratulations" and put on a happy front while hating you all inside.

Hehe.

On the subject of an essay orgy: At TASP, I think one of the ways we got to know each other at first was by asking what we wrote our essays on. (except for perhaps maybe the conflict one, which was kind of unofficially off limits to ask about) Eventually, it was really enjoyable to read other people's essays. People write really interesting things. So yeah, I fully appreciate the idea of an essay orgy, but there's a time and a place.

Hahahaha. Orgy.

Hmmm I think the essays give a decent insight to each applicant.
The crit analysis (I keep wanting to abreeve that, but then I'd end up with anal. Lawl. Anal. I'm so mature...) shows one's ability to think and and their intellectual capabilities. And the two issues essays are insights to one's personality and values. The other one (future plans) is largely a look at academics...not necessarily ability, but drive, I suppose??

I don't know...I just made that up, so that may not be entirely right on.

Acturial my advice is to pick between RSI and TASP. :-( I know both are highly competitive and take a lot of time and unless your already done with RSI you will be detracting from BOTH of the apps. To apply to one of these programs requires so much passion and time and dedication that trying to cram both into 5 days with finals will put you at a big disadvantage.

haha crazy a page and 1/2 since my comment this morning. :-D

My final was good, thanks for all the encouragement.
It was hella easy. I finished in 50 minutes with 2 hours, which means i knew what i was doing or failed terribly.

After that I had chem which i was freaking out about, having hardest teacher and all, it was pretty conceptual so nothing to in depth. =-D

That was a good day. Then I studied for 5 hours in math class, now I'm here eating a bagel.

Happy Tuesday everyone!!!

And tako, I can imagine what you're saying.

"Lyyyke OMGZ!! I made it!!!"
"MEEEEE TOO!!! I'm SOOOOOO happy!!!"

And I'll disappear...it'll be my way to telling everyone I got rejected.
I'm rather self-conscious/self-aware like that...

Just wondering. How long are your rankings and future education/occupation essays?

My future one is short (like half a page), but I really like it. My rankings one is a page.

and just another comment on the essay orgy:

at this course (pop culture) i took two summers ago, we had massive essay orgies where we critiqued each other's writing and then talked about it together (with the person who wrote the essay on mute, or "in the lobster tank", as we called it). it was so fun and i miss it a lot. tasp just seems like a huge orgy altogether, intellectually and emotionally and mentally. which provides the motivation for me to write these essays.

and now back to studying for my bio test. lol.

APUSH for me :(.
