@carrotchild same, so I am rewriting all 3 long essays, funnnnnnn.
@cxnxicee same! was yours professional? or not
@carrotchild what do you mean by professional? like very mature? I think it depends on what ideas you put forth in the application. I did not use crazy big words at all, since I try to be authentic and myself
Just stumbled across this summer program. I am assuming by this thread that there are some pretty rigorous essays involved. Do you think it would be too late to have my D start now?
For the list of my most relevant activities, work or volunteer experiences, scholarship programs, honors, and awards, do I have to include stuff that I’ve already discussed in the long essays?
@yeeyawine maybe you can put down the name of the activities and say something like “refer to essay…” ? Not sure tho.
@toomanykiddos if D is interested in the program, then go ahead.
@cxnxicee oh I see!!! i sort of rotated between being super goofy/personal to quite analytical thinking so it’s sort of weird!
Finalizing my essays now!! I’m seriously considering rewriting my first one. Did you guys talk about topics that were super unique? I’m having a tough time thinking of anything beyond generic terms.
For the first round, we only need those 3 essays and 3 short answers? Or do we need transcripts or anything else from our school? Or just and only the essays ?
@Acortez122 Just essays.
@carrotchild I talk about moving from HK to U.S. alone and changing 3 schools within 1 year and half… I also talk about how I missed learning Chinese formally in HK, and how I overcame homesickness. Pretty generic in my opinion, but I don’t live a splendid life.
@Acortez122 I’m also talking about only one experience for the first essay (#1). Did you one experience answer all of the questions or only one?
@cxnxicee Oh that’s sounds great!! I’ve never moved so that seems like it would really be a large impact on your life. Did you only talk about that one experience to answer all of the questions? I’m touching specifically on one event of my life but I’m having a tough time concretely answering ALL the questions.
@carrotchild I used leaving my hometown as a thread and expanded on other experiences.
I have the same problem as you! I don’t know if my responses are sufficient enough. I am having a real hard time on the third essay:(
I am relying on 700-1000 word’s an essay to be okay. It’s hard for me to write so much without sounding like I am repeating myself…
@malaalenase me too! my second essay was by far my weakest, and i think it was 700 something words. i’m pretty sure that the content is more carefully evaluated than the length (or general writing ability) though
@SeattleDreamer do they not judge on general writing ability? I thought that would be pretty important
@carrotchild I would definitely recommend looking up the website and just reading the guidelines, it was super helpful. While they do judge writing ability and overall clarity, they prioritize content over anything. So while it is important, your actual material is more important.
@carrotchild they look at the essays as a whole for sure, but in general, it seems that they’re more interested in what you have to say rather than how you say it
@SeattleDreamer @malaalenase Thank you! Hopefully they don’t dislike my informal tone though :))
