TASP 2019

Hey Guys! I have a couple questions.

  1. This program seems like its directed towards people of color, does it give you an advantage if your a person a color?
  2. Not really a question but good luck to everyone!

Also once we find out who got in we should create a GroupMe or something like that!

@Princessssmo Maybe you’re thinking of TASS, the black studies thing for sophomores?

@odyssey3102 Prestige isn’t really too important here, at least not in comparison to something like the Common App - it’s all about the essays. If you don’t have activities with, say, national impact, you can compensate for that by describing what you did with them, especially if you created something significant (a fundraiser, a piece of artwork, etc.). For example, I play the harp, so a few of the activities I put down were fairly obscure in that they were local youth orchestras and nonprofit that I had played with. I remedied that by writing that I had played this solo or performed at that charity ball for a good cause; that kind of thing. The effect you’ve had through your activities is more important than the name-brand recognition.

just submitted!!! good luck to everyone!!!

@violatte52

I’m not @5toryt3ll3r, but I do know that the essay critique isn’t free. It’s understandable; to give a thorough critique, one needs a decent chunk of time. It’s probably not a trivial amount of work.

@collegeSLAPS No need for a Works Cited page; you can just name the author/creator the first time you describe your chosen text, and if it’s a written piece that you directly quote from, simple MLA format (Author Name, Page Number) should more than suffice.

@violatte52 Sorry, didn’t see this before! Since I put in several hours and paragraphs upon paragraphs of critiquing, I do have to charge :slight_smile: But I’ll always be here on CC to help y’all out as much as I possibly can. Feel free to email me at info@myivyeducation.org for more information!

@5toryt3ll3r Hi! I’d be very interested in getting critique on my essays - just wondering, is a certain time at which you need the essays sent in?

What have people done for the 3a essay? I can’t think of anything for the life of me, though I know others were struggling with it too.

@random72 Thank you so much! I was really freaking out!

@5toryt3ll3r I used a poem for my 2nd essay and for a big part of it, I formatted some statements like the poem. I wasn’t doing it to plagiarize, I was trying to show the parallels between me and the author. Did I screw up?

@almondmilk Tonight would probably be the latest for you to be absolutely safe with getting it in and avoiding a potential submissions portal meltdown, but I could technically do tomorrow morning as well - whatever works for you!

@mullophone Oh wow, that’s an interesting scenario. That doesn’t sound like plagiarism to me, so long as you were clear about your intentions.

@5toryt3ll3r Do you know when the TASP people notify you on whether or not you move on to the next round?

@TheMadScientistX In general I’ve seen it’s early march

Lol, I haven’t started 3a and I want to rewrite 3b. I have a foggy idea about what I want to write for 3a, but I have no idea what to say for 3b. I do think 1 and 2 are good, though, although it’s hard to tell because I’m never satisfied with my writing.

@TheMadScientistX I received my notification on March 3!

Do I need the city or just like the state for place of birth?

@5toryt3ll3r Okey dokey, thanks!

Do you know if it is ok to use a friend’s name in an essay. For question 3a, I want to talk about to a friend that I upset, but should I use their name or just refer to them as “a friend.”

@btsarmy123 I used an actual name of a friend when I applied to TASS and it turned out alright. I don’t think it will affect you.
