Tasp?

I am currently a rising sophmore, but I am looking into the TASP program. Has anyone here applied, or gotten in? It looks amazing (and the fact that it is free of cost is a bonus). Can anyone tell me what they look for in the applications and what to do now so that I can have a better chance to be admitted later. Also does particapating in the program (that is if I am accepted) help with college admissions?

See my response in the high school life thread.

It's ok, you won't get in with that kind of spelling and grammar.
<3

Yes, particpating in TASP can have a huge effect on college admissions, but its not a guarantee that you'd get into an ivy

I second butcherer.

Writing skills play a major part - you have to write multiple essays for the application.

um, you're starting way to early. go do something else and talk to us in a year and a half

Look into TASS; it's a program held by the Telluride Association for students after their sophomore year. :]

TASS sucks and pretty much only recruits black people.
But mainly, it sucks.

Hey is my spelling and grammar really that bad?

butcherer, i don't know you well enough to be able to tell if that comment about TASS was a joke or not. Care to explain?

he speaks teh truth

Why does TASS suck?

because it has a-s-s in it

It sucks because your TASP was all work and no play :(

TA doesn't really pay attention to TASS, which is why it's always marked as a young, developing program. For TASP, for example, they have Cornell, UMich, Deep Springs apps, and a guy coming to talk about joining TA, as if they want the people in TASP to continue to be affiliated with L.L. Nunn. TASS is like a one night stand- they don't even tell the kids to apply to TASP.

And I heard the people suck :(. And summer programs = people.

There were three TASSers at my TASP, and they all really enjoyed their TASS experiences. My roommate was a former TASSer and she said the people she met were some of the most amazing she has ever known, and she keeps in close touch with a lot of them.

I also think that Telluride is making an effort to reach out to their TASS alumni, and they definitely do encourage the kids to apply to TASP. What you have to remember is that TASS draws from a different type of pool than TASP. These kids may simply not see taking a summer off to study ancient literature as an option for them, for whatever reasons. But many do go on to TASP and/or the houses.

There was a TASSer at my TASP, and she said she disliked the people, there was much drama, and from what the TASSer and my factotum said, TA doesn't really try to reach out to TASS. Indeed, the TASSer didn't even know about TASP until she got the mail.

I guess we have different lenses through which we see TASS. I still think that, if it is notas academically intense, with worse people and less attention given, then it would be better spending that summer doing something else.

Yeah, I guess it just depends on the person and the TASS.

Which TASP did you go to, btw? I was at WashU.

hi! ok, i think this is a great time for me to jump in. i know 2 of the 3 tassers at wash u (kb and jb) and i am said tasser/tasper from ut. first of all, its true that ta does target african americans for tass...that doesn't mean that others won't get in. and, butcherer, you make it sound like they don't care about tass or what happens there. well, i did find out about tasp thru tasp. not only that, but we had a speaker (just like sam 2) that talked to us about tasp and the cornell/mich houses. not to mention the very generous scholarship that michigan offers to previous tassers...that said, butcherer, let me say that YES there was a hell of a lot of drama at my tass, but it was totally worth it. ps. vegangirl how was your tasp?

It was awesome! I had a great time. We had some seminar issues (they assigned us a bunch of extra reading not approved by telluride, a few too many lectures instead of discussion, etc), but nothing too major. And it doesn't take long into the whole TASP thing to figure out it's more about the people than the class anyway.

It's funny that you know k and j. kb was actually my roommate! She's a fantastic person, ridiculously smart too. i think i remember her talking to you on the phone during TASP. random connection there, lol.

how was your TASP? and why didn't you send us anything in response to our war declaration? hmm? :)
