Does anyone know if a student who was accepted to a specific department can take courses outside of that department? For example, I was accepted to the Humanities and Social Sciences if I wanted to take a course that is not in that department how would that work?
Noooo!!! Their loss, @acceptme2022 !!
@acceptme2022, what safeties rejected you? I’m asking because my D wants to go to schools that would be safeties for her stats. I’m hearing about these safeties rejecting great applicants, but my daughter WANTS to go either a match or safety…no reaches!!!
@rejected22 yes! you have to fulfill a certain amount of general education credits to graduate so you will be taking classes in every school
@NJmom71 I didn’t get rejected by any safeties, but the 2 safeties I got waitlisted from were Stevens Inst. of Technology and TCNJ. People with lower scores/GPA and less ECs than me got half and full merit scholarships, so I’m guessing it’s because I never had the time to visit those schools and show my interest.
Hey all, I got in! I was really surprised, I was totally expecting to get waitlisted. I guess it all worked out! I’m sorry to all those who didn’t get in, but I have no doubt all of you will end up at a school you love and meet a ton of new great friends! Best of luck to all!
Son waitlisted. Oh well. 3.8 gpa, 34 ACT, multiple campus visits and ECs. Comp Sci certainly was competitive this year at TCNJ!
Would help if I’d put in the full amount of the merit :
COA Merit Yearly COA 4 year Total
Rowan 30985 13000 17985 71940
NJIT 36498 10000 26498 105992
TCNJ 34467 5000 29467 117868
VA Tech 43190 0000 43190 172760
Stevens 67000 23000 44000 176000
Lafayette 66890 0000 66890 267560
Whoever got rejected/waitlisted from TCNJ, just know that it’s their loss and everything will work out.
@Sally50 That’s unbelievable. I hope he has another good option.
UA Huntsville would love these kids and I think they’d get free tuition and room.
Is it too late to apply for Rowan?
@NJRoadie is the cost of attendance for TCNJ really $34,467 a year? I was hoping it would be less than that. At least for the in-state tuition.
@ChapstickSangria $29,348 is the direct cost but it’s important to consider expenses for books and all those little extra things that add up so you are prepared.
I find myself debating how much I as a parent am willing to save on the front end…at the potential expense of my child on the back end.
If only there was ROI Data I could depend on. Or, more empirical ways to gauge the strength of a schools program compared to its peers. Too much anecdotal information out there.
I think TCNJ is a great value proposition (along with other State Schools in NJ); however, how does one weigh it’s worth against another school’s? Or it’s majors (say Computer Science Program) against another school’s?
^^ I have the same problem.
@sunshinechick are you transferring in with an associates, or just credits?
Sorry, meant @sunflowerchick
@ChapstickSangria
I gathered all the COA data from the same place (CollegeData website).
Some of the factors are variable - so how much you spend on books, travel, etc. To be consistent, I went with the COA listed there.
@Clueless_Leader - I think you have to evaluate value but also consider the impact repaying loans has. If you can afford to pay the top price, go for it. In our case we decided that saving $45,000 (Rowan vs TCNJ) was worth it. Our kids will graduate with no debt. Others may feel differently and we are lucky to have some great choices in our area!
@tcnjnursing I just received an Honors invitation email today, so I guess they’re still sending them out.
@NightCheese5119 with an AA!
