Not really they can go up to only 10k
10K + 5.5K in federal loans + 4.5K in work (part time work now + summer work + work study) should cover the rest for TCNJ, without extra loans?
If I understand correct:
Rowan net price = $9,000 per year
others’ net prices = $20,000 per year
parent contribution <= $10,000 per year
Hmmm, so the choices are Rowan without any loans or work earnings needed, or the other schools with maximum federal direct loans and a relatively high work earnings amount needed? Seems like Rowan would be a less stressful choice, especially if your hours available for work are limited by time spent on expected pre-med extracurriculars.
Yep I guess I can work study lol but I am scared I won’t have time to do things that matter for med school
Maybe going to Rowan is better than stressing myself to the max lol I’d have the free time to volunteer or do something useful and for the figures above they’re all correct!
The honors program at Rowan is very strong. I have a scholar there now so first (well second!) hand experience. Very small class sizes (for honors like 10 very smart kids). Lot of perks too - first shot at class registration, great dorms, cool extracurricular experiences etc.
Regular class sizes are smaller too (less than 30 in gen eds).
Realize that I graduated from TCNJ as a bio major and I loved it there, did independent research from soph year on. >>However, if you want med school and aren’t in the TCNJ 7 year med school program, I’d go to Rowan and save my money for med school. TCNJ isn’t so fabulous that you should come out with debt of any appreciable amount (>5K) to go there over Rowan.
Absolutely kick ass as an undergrad, hang with the smart kids, excel in and out of class and you’ll get into med school. What everyone on CC has said (and I’ve been reading for a couple of years is that if you want med school, do not get into debt for undergrad, med schools are prestige blind - it doesn’t matter if you went to fancy school, they look at MCAT scores, GPA and activities. Poke over to the Financial Aid and Scholarships board, there are parents there who seem to know there stuff re: Med School I am just parroting what I’ve read
Best of luck!
@NJRoadie Yes! I like to think I will be motivated to succeed anywhere. It all comes down if the college is a fit for me.
I am going to visit Rowan once more:)
WELL for all future students-- I decided on RUTGERS SAS Honors -Biology Major!!
It was the easiest option in terms of transportation because I literally can come home anytime and its easy (cause I can’t have a car freshmen year). And I got into the Honors program with all of its perks (guaranteed housing, smaller classes, etc.) It also helps that there are two hospitals within the campus itself. As for class size and stuff the classes will get smaller after I go through weed out courses and I feel I’ll grow as a person after experiencing that:)
Where is the Honors housing? College Ave area?
@OnTheBubble I listed McCormick, BUSCH campus as my first choice cause I’ll be able to live in a suite lol
Hopefully I do get a room there
@Upenngirl98 Interesting. So why did you decide to go to Rutgers? Reading back over the thread it seemed as though you were leaning to TCNJ.
In the end, is the price difference what you thought it was going to be?
“Rutgers about 20k and for Rowan its only 9k” after scholarship money?
Interested in your thought process making this decision
Congrats!!! Rutgers is definitely a good choice.
