@onette local Dallas Theater Company. I was just pointing out that a lot of TCU students are going to come out with equity points… and potentially a card.
That is so great! I am so excited to see it! Yes, my son is able to take his card. He hasn’t decided to take it yet, but such a great option to have while still in school. A definite benefit.
@onette it is a professional show in Dallas. Their Spring show is 42nd Street
Is it a challenge to rehearse / perform in Spring Awakening and 42nd Street, along with coursework and other activities in which they’re involved or is this quite manageable?
@Twelfthman Spring Awakening is a professional show in Dallas. It is busy now that school has started back, but the last show is Feb 3rd. 42nd Street is TCU’s mainstage Spring musical and isn’t until April 24th. Yes being in 2 shows and school would be crazy! My son has managed it well. It really depends on the individual student. TCU students audition for all shows for the semester right before the semester begins. TCU productions take precedence, and with permission from the dept, they can be in the professional shows. Students also have to work the shows they are not cast in as part of graduation requirements…props, scenery, lighting etc… I am sure that is common with most schools. Being a BFA MT student is very busy. I don’t know how they do it!! I sure couldn’t! I was very good @ sleeping in ?
yeah, Feb 2… then we’re rushing to the airport to head to Chicago Unifieds that night. He already had to miss NY Unifieds because of this show… and Michigan’s dance call was on the 3rd, so he had to reschedule to an on-campus audition on the 15th. Ugh!
Does anyone know if TCU still has openings at Chicago Unifieds. This school wasn’t on our radar until a few weeks ago and the more I hear and research about it, I feel like it would be a great fit. The deadline is tomorrow I think, but I don’t want to waste money if the spots are already full. Thanks!
Historically, if you have already applied to the school, you could get a walk in. But, you could also call the TCU Theatre Department; they would be happy to let you know. Contact Sue Anne Cameron and she should be able to help you. Her contact info is on the website.
@tmygirl just got to see the show! Your son was amazing as was the entire show!
Are Wyly Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, Lyric Stage and Theatre Three the primary companies / venues supporting professional theater and musicals in Dallas?
@TexasMTDad I was there too! Wasn’t it unbelievable? Your son was awesome! Best wishes at Unifieds! He’ll rock them!
@Twelfthman there are so many in DFW. Uptown Players and Circle Theatre as well
According to Actor’s Equity:
“The DFW region has over 75 theater companies, 30 of which employ Equity members under a variety of contracts including LORT, COST, SPT, TYA, Special Appearance and Umbrella agreements.”
DFW isn’t Chicago, but there is a pretty good theatre scene here. Lots of opportunities, big and small.
My son is a senior in high school and he has been working nonstop for a year and a half… 2 were with Junior Players, which is high school kids from all over DFW), 3 community, 2 regional (ie equity) amd a couple of shows for school.
I don’t know if you mentioned Casa Manana in Fort Worth, or Dallas Children’s Theater, but those are two other great regional theaters. Casa and Dallas Theater Center are probably the 2 big dogs… but the others mentioned all excellent.
@loribelle many community theaters will hire an equity actor to headline a show or two, although not necessarily on every show.
@tmygirl one more thing… I loved your son’s voice, but when he went into falsetto, my jaw hit the floor. Wow! And that kid can act… which is not a given for musical theatre.
@TexasMTDad Thank you so much. Your guy has an awesome voice and can act too! Can’t wait to hear where he ends up. Feel free to reach out with any questions once he starts getting offers. Very exciting time! My son is actually a baritone. We loved hearing his range in SA. All the best!!
yeah, my son told me that, but I didn’t realize it during the show.
