Teach for America: 2011-2012

I am from Ohio and I don’t know much about wait-listing, but I did find a thread this year (though I can’t remember which) with people who were wait-listed from the first and second deadlines. Most of the time it seems that the wait-listing happens if people preference regions that are very popular or can only be placed in one or two places because of other reasons. If you are accepted and you are willing to be placed all over, then you most likely won’t get wait-listed if what I have read is correct.

Oh cool thanks hopeful, I guess that makes sense. I’m in Austin, TX - I guess I’m glad I was pretty liberal with my highly preferred regions :P

Bookaddict are you in TFA? You seem to be the go-to person for information so far haha.

Are you sure the 15-20% waitlisting statistic is for corps members and not for staff members? That seems awfully high; it’s higher than the acceptance rate.

FWIW, I haven’t heard of anyone being waitlisted so far this year; there was a lot more discussion about waitlisting last year.

Oh cool thanks aussie, I’ll just hope there’s not one this year. Oh and that I’m not denied too. And you were right it was on a staff FAQ, whoops! Strike that. Are you in TFA aussie?

I was accepted at the first deadline for 2011-2013. At the moment, I’m TAing through another program.

For those of us who were accepted, where is your placement region? I’ll be in the Mississippi Delta! :)

Being waitlisted vs. accepted supposedly has nothing to do with your preferences, though I suppose it could happen with later deadlines.

And Huntervj, yes, I am a first year CM placed in Oklahoma.

The Mississippi Delta seems like a really cool region to be placed. You will definitely have a great opportunity to help set up the region well. I did a conference call about the region and it seems like it is also a lot of fun!

I’ll be in the Bay Area!

3rd deadline also

I am curious. DD received an email, holiday greeting today from her recruiter saying something along the lines of Congratulations on finishing interview, am looking forward to working with you next year.

Would you consider this along the lines of a “likely letter?”

Gosh, it would be a great xmas present!

No, pretty much everyone gets a holiday e-mail I think (I got one last year after I was accepted, and another one this year as a current CM).

I will be a 2011 corps member in the Bay Area next year, anyone else in the Bay Area?

Ahhh! I’m getting so anxious about whether or not I got accepted. Does anyone know who accepts corps members? Is it going to be the same people who did the all-day interview?

I’m pretty sure they will continue using the waitlist, as they have done the previous two years. I was actually waitlisted last year and was accepted into the Corps this year through an abbreviated reapplication process.

And StealthSettings, the people who accept corps members are different from the people who interviewed you. The interviewers are tasked with compiling additional data, which is then cumalitive used to determine if you’ll be accepted or not.

I know a lot of very highly qualified people who have been denied admittance, so I hope you have a back-up plan. This quote from the NY Times (<a href=“A Chosen Few Are Teaching for America - The New York Times”>A Chosen Few Are Teaching for America - The New York Times) says it all:

Mr. Goldberg, Mr. Rosen, Ms. Carlson, Mr. Cullen and Ms. Bigger count themselves lucky to be among the 4,500 selected by the nonprofit to work at high-poverty public schools from a record 46,359 applicants (up 32 percent over 2009). There’s little doubt the numbers are fueled by a bad economy which has limited job options even for graduates from top campuses. In 2007, during the economic boom, 18,172 people applied.

What differentiates accepted & rejected applicants out of the pool selected to interview (mock-teach)?

I’m just curious because a few of my friends have applied to TFA, some successfully and some less so. I’ve heard the metrics they use aren’t things like GPA, at least, but something quite different. Would love to hear what you guys know.

For the people who are waiting to find out for the third deadline, when you log into the application status on TFA’s website today, does it say something about registering on february 28th for the in person interview?

I applied for the 3rd deadline, and when I logged in, it said something about signing up on 2/28. I have no idea what that means.

I think it might just be a glitch because the 4th deadline notification comes out today. I was wondering if it meant something else but who knows.

My status still says “Congrats! You have been invited to attend a final interview” but nothing about registering.

Mine is back to normal now. Oh well, I just want Tuesday to come already.
