Hi,

This is the official Teach for America thread. Anyone else applying this round?

Is it weird if a recruiter contacted me? Or is that standard procedure?

Hi,

I’m applying for round 3. A recruiter contacted me as well. It’s a good sign.

They recruit pretty heavily, especially at certain schools and to certain demographics, so it’s not weird. Doesn’t mean you have a better chance of getting in, though.

Hey guys, did anybody else get this “special invite” from the director of the Mississipi Delta region? *Let me know if you’ve applied or not" and if you did apply and got it, at what point did you get it?

Dated Oct 11, about a week or two after my phone interview, after receiving the invite for the final interview, and after completing the online written activity. FYI, I applied for the Sept. 23 deadline.

I felt he use such strong words in the bolded section…isn’t it a bad idea to send that kind of message to everybody? or did he only send it to a select group?

Subject: “Special invite from Ron Nurnberg, Executive Director”

"Dear X,

I want to offer a personal invitation to join our online event about the Mississippi Delta. We are bringing the largest corps in the Delta’s history to the region this fall and we hope that you will consider joining this movement.

The need in the Delta’s classrooms is greater than ever and we are optimistic when we consider the opportunity ahead of us. This is your moment - a unique point in time where you can partner with an energetic community to deliver meaningful change. Delta corps members are defined by integrity, perseverance, and a dedication to entrepreneurial leadership. You can transform what is possible in low-income schools throughout the region. I don’t mean to be presumptuous, but I firmly believe this legacy is yours too. I know that you have the ability to leave an enduring imprint and make powerful change from the classroom to the community, opening a world of opportunities for your students and their families.

I hope you choose to identify the Delta as a preferred region and subsequently bring your entrepreneurial spirit and influence to bear in our classrooms. Our schools need leaders like you - thoughtful, determined, and capable individuals who will impact prevailing ideologies and systems. You will be needed to go beyond the classroom; for instance, nearly 80% of our corps members are holding leadership positions in their schools, from serving as department chairs to coaching after-school sports teams. As you embark on this path, you will not be alone. I, alongside the other regional staff members, will eagerly support you. You can rely on your fellow outstanding Delta corps members and alumni, 500+ strong. You will find that the cost-of-living runs low and our corps culture runs deep. Most importantly, you will be warmly welcomed and make meaningful connections with the children and families of the Delta.

I am proud of the fact that anyone who comes to the Delta will feel like they have found their home. You can look forward to “Welcome Teach For America” signs on stores and home-cooked dinners by donors. Right now, there is a supportive community and a classroom of students waiting for you. If you come here and choose to work hard, you will change their lives for the better. If you don’t, they will not have another teacher like the one you could be - and likely will continue to be a product of inequity.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. EST. I’m looking forward to chatting with you."

I’m pretty confident that TFA does the same emails to all applicants who are at a particular stage. FWIW, I got the same email on the same date.

Yes, there are several regions that are “high need” that they really push you to preference. That sounds like a general invite to an online event. (I’m a current CM, so I didn’t receive this particular e-mail.)

Yeah, that’s what I thought too, but it’s interesting how the guy seemed so optimistic! Anyway, how did your final interviews go? I think the last day to interview for this round was today, so…

I was invited to join the Mississippi Delta corps! I applied for the second deadline. Anyone else get an invite?

Congrats! I know you’ll have tons of people telling you this, but if you have questions, do feel free to ask me. :)

Thank you so much!! The outflowing of support from the TFA community has been so impactful. I’ve been waiting for this moment for 4 years, and I almost still can’t believe it. :)

I also was accepted; I applied for the first deadline. :)

I’m an applicant in the third deadline. Does anyone know anything about the summer training institute? I have family and I don’t know what I’m going to do about housing, having time to see them, etc etc…

Summer training institute is very hard with family, as you are in a different city and busy pretty much all day. However, they do have family housing you can pay for, and you do have some time, particularly on weekends.

Do you think that not preferencing the Miss Delta after being encouraged to do so, reflects badly on an applicant?

Not at all. They encourage everyone to preference it, but your preferences have no bearing on whether or not you’re accepted.

I applied to the third deadline and had my final interview last week. Now I am just waiting. Does anyone ever get notified before the official notification date?

Hey everyone,
I applied for the third deadline as well. I had my final interview already and now just waiting! Is the summer institute in Aug or earlier in the summer? Thanks in advanced

Institute is in June/July (https://www.teachforamerica.org/admissions/how-to-apply/institute-schedule/). Note that you’ll also have a regional induction, which happens before institute. Induction lasts around a week, though it may be shorter in some regions.

I’m so glad I found this thread I don’t know anyone else applying to TFA! I applied to the third deadline as well and am currently waiting for the results - longest month and two weeks of my life! But I just saw that TFA has waitlisted a good portion (15-20%) of candidates in the past two years. Has anyone heard if this will be the case? They would have already waitlisted people from the first two rounds…waiting any longer to find out would not be fun.

Where are you guys from?

I’m sure they’re doing waitlisting again, but I don’t know how many people will be waitlisted.
