Teach for America: 2011-2012

Anyone else in Baltimore?

Yep I’ll be in Baltimore next year.

For those of you interested in or accepted to New York City, is it the truth that a requirement is that you must pursue a teaching Master’s degree? I was not aware of this, nor have I heard that as a requirement in any other location.

According to http://www.teachforamerica.org/assets/documents/tfa-regionalcosts.xls</a> (I hope I’m allowed to post that link), yes, NYC CMs have to get their Master’s. It looks like some people in the Mid-Atlantic region have to, as well.

so who will be in philly with me? or at least the mid-atlantic region?

I’m teaching secondary mathematics, and got accepted from the first deadline. I’m really looking forward to this!

i teach in the MAR with tfa (mid atlantic region) but i’m in delaware…we’re splitting off next year. i teach hs science though, but if you have any questions about institute, etc, i’d be happy to help!

good luck to everyone going through their final round interviews right now…

thanks, pew. i am currently awaiting a response from TFA. so exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time! anyone else awaiting a response? anyone know how many people they will be selecting from the final batch of applicants???

Hello everyone! I had my final interview a few weeks go. I am waiting for the April 4th Notification Day! I am super anxious and nervous. I’ve read a lot of the previous years threads and it seems like a lot of people have been waitlisted in the past. I’m also nervous because this is the final deadline. Does anyone know how many people TFA accepts from the final round? Anywho…good luck to everyone!

This has been the longest two weeks of my life. April 4th cannot arrive soon enough! Good luck everyone!

Wow, well I feel glad to have finally found two other people waiting for the April 4th deadline who are also from the final round! If we find no one else to answer our questions, I’m at least happy to have found you guys! How do you guys feel your final interview went? I left mine over-analyzing it, of course, but now I think it went okay. From what I’ve read online from previous applicants though is that even interviews that seem to have gone well don’t always mean you make it in…ugh. I will be refreshing my page April 4th for sure!

I’m still over-analyzing it! Haha! I can only cross my fingers now…not like I can change anything. What are you hoping to teach?

I’m so excited that I’ve found others that can relate! I personally feel that my final interview went well. The only thing that I am concerned about is the fact that I did not complete my lesson plan in 5 minutes. This frustrates me bc I practiced it a million times in front of friends and there weren’t any issues. But, I feel like I don’t regret anything so if it’s meant to be then it will be…still very nervous though. I would like to teach English/Language Arts… ONE MORE WEEK LEFT!

Lol, yeah, there is nothing we can do now, but fingers are crossed! I would love to teach either early childhood education, elementary students, or middle school students. If I get middle school students then I would love to teach Englinsh/Language Arts as well or math (pre-algebra, algebra). What about you, WordArt?
And Hill, I’ve asked so many questions about the 5 minute thing and going over is the least thing to be worried about (almost everyone goes over). I’ve heard as long as it was efficient and effective then that is what truly counts. So as long as you weren’t trying to teach physics and failed to engage others then you should be fine. Are you guys hoping to be placed in a specific region or are you really flexible? I personally would love to be placed anywhere as long as I get to make a huge impact on the students (although somewhere without bi-polar weather would be a nice surprise…and change from my current state!).

My first choice is to teach middle school language arts, but I have a very open mind! I work best with older kids, so anything above 4th grade is my preference.

I felt very neutral about my interview when I left. I felt like I had so much more I could have said in the one on one, but I felt my lesson went very well. I had a discussion as part of the lesson and the “students” were very engaged. :)

I wish I felt a little more confident about it, but I’m always my harshest critic! Haha.

I’m with you Somoa, I would go anywhere, so long as I can teach and make a difference. I did place cities and rural areas along the east coast as highly preferred regions because I honestly don’t think I’ll have the money to fly back and forth on holidays to see my family. (I’m originally from Maine and currently in Connecticut.) I’m sure I can make it work though! I have family in the Bay Area and Seattle, so I’d love to go out there too!

As far as grade level, my preference is elementary or middle school. I did not rank regions in order. I did at first but then I spoke with people that I know that are TFA alums and researched the waitlist and thought I had the best chances of getting in without being waitlisted if I was flexible. I checked the option that said I would go anywhere with the exception of 5 particular places. I’m really like you guys, I just want the opportunity to make a difference.

I live in a state where the weather is CRAZY, hot one day and snowing the next. If I could just go somewhere with a steady climate I would be happy lol.

So the website says that we will find out on the 4th after 8 pm. Do you guys think that is accurate? I think that could possibly just be the lastest that we could hear something. Hopefully they will start releasing letters earlier in the day!

Based on earlier posts, I think we’re likely to start hearing earlier in the day. I hope so! April 4th is going to be the longest day of my life.

Oh my goodness, I know what you mean about the weather. Seriously, where I’m at there was a tornado warning during a really bad thunderstorm one night and then the very next day (not exaggerating) it snowed 6 inches! It IS crazy.
I never thought I would be able to work with little kids either until I started working at a daycare. It’s actually not so bad working with the 4-5 year olds (now, the younger ones are a completely different story especially with three year olds, sigh-they really test my patience, ha)
Yeah, the wait list thing is a little nerve wracking, but I would be happy even with that because I saw that the majority of wait listed people were placed eventually (even some at the very last minute). But, of course, being placed on April 4th would be ideal! Yes, it will be the longest day for me, too. I hope you’re right, Hill, and it ends up being earlier…that would be awesome.
I understand the distance from family thing. I didn’t even think of that. Hmmm. Well, I’m used to making little money as a working college student so with a real career salary (even if it is $30,000) I should be able to make traveling work. I’ll feel really rich!
I chose the "Send me anywhere with the exception of…, too). Hopefully that is still pretty flexible. What are you guys studying right now? I’m studying political science and Spanish.

Yeah the teacher’s salary will definitely be an increase compared to what I’m making now working at a bank, but still…right now paying for groceries, cell phone, car insurance and many, many repairs and other random expenses is draining almost the entirety of my paychecks. I’m currently an RA, so I’m not paying rent. Factoring in rent and utilities…I don’t think I’m going to be saving a TON of money. I checked current plane ticket prices out of a few random airports and I was less than pleased. LOL. I think I would feel more financially comfortable on the east coast.

I’m studying communications (media studies) and music.

hey guys! I’m also playing the waiting game-April 4th seems so far away! Glad to see I’m not the only anxious one!
