Teach For America 2014 Corps

going to a final interview in ny!

@Stressy Institute is important because you only get 5 weeks to prepare. So everyday is critical. That being said, I think you get the opportunity to submit a form to miss a day or two so try use their help feature to ask someone about that. And worst case scenario, you might want to consider applying again year. There are plenty of gap year experiences out there that are great not only to building your resume, but also exposing you to different aspects of education. Then you can apply to the corps at the first deadline, which help you get your first regional choices.

@Stessy That form is an option. I just saw it the other day when I was doing my placement form. I wouldn’t want to miss graduation either! Glad mine is in May.

Hey all, I am completing my region preference sheet and it’s allowing me to list “Potential Expansion Regions”. Any of the other DLs have this option? Did anyone get placed in a Potential Expansion Region? Any info on this would be great. I’m interested in the Central Florida region

I think that was an option for everyone. I had it for the second deadline. I don’t know if anyone got placed, but I know it’s possible. TFA expands every year since districts seek TFA corps members. I know Pittsburgh recently made headlines because its district first approved a TFA contract, but then rejected it a couple months later. I think that was the first time that ever happened. But I think highly prioritizing those regions would be a great opportunity since you would be the first corps member class there. So you would have many opportunities to quickly find leadership roles within the organization.

Yeah I was bummed out about Pittsburgh. From what I saw on the news and things, the expansion regions that will most likely happen for the upcoming year is Richmond (VA), Buffalo, and Idaho. I’m not sure about the other ones, I haven’t seen anything about them, but I suppose things could still happen so if you’re interested in the region, you mind as well put it down!

I’m from Orlando and they said it won’t be an option till 2015, still working on partnerships and funding.

Hi everyone,
I also applied for TFA 4DL (Jan 24th, 2014) and I got my phone interview and was invited to the final interview. My final interview is in Chicago and i am really nervous about it. My region preference are Chicago (obviously lol), Delaware and I also chose San Diego (potential expansion region). Let me know if anyone is going to the final interview in Chicago or anyone have chosen any of the regions I chose.

Hi again y’all lol
I am extremely nervous about the final interview lol I know they only accept like 15% of all the applicant :frowning: Do you guys have any ideas whats the percentage of people getting through to the phone interview and whats the percentage for the final interview? I read an article the other days and it pretty much says everyone who applies get all the way to the final interview so i am not sure if thats true or not … also i forgot to mention above that I also applied for Las Vegas Valley (high priority region) and I chose HS Math, Social Studies and General Science. Also, anyone filling out the Transitional Fund Application? One more question is how are you guys doing with the 5 minutes teaching sample? I was thinking of teaching dance lol or sociology.

Hi @kv4life,

Somebody posted this link earlier in the thread that does a good job in breaking down the acceptance rates at each aspect of the application process. http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/pubs/20134015/pdf/20134015.pdf</a>
As far as the teaching sample, I just made sure to make it engaging. Also, be prepared for every circumstance (no white board or chalkboard) and practice setting up in under a minute.

Good luck!

Hello 4DLers

=D> Congrats on making it this far, many people don’t (I hope this answers the question about everyone making it).I was accepted into the Philadelphia corps during the 3dl and I will be teaching middle school math. For the final interview, I would just say be yourself and COMPLETE your lesson. This means you should practice it over and over again, and don’t forget to budget time for questions that the “students” may have. Also don’t worry about percentages, you have to go in there and do YOUR best and for the group discussion, be engaging but don’t hog all of the attention.

**Word of advice, look at the Praxis tests that you would have to take before putting that subject on your preference list. I didn’t realize this until after the fact and was lucky enough to have my subject changed.

Good Luck everyone!!!

That ies report is great for an idea of how many people get moved on to the next round. At a final interview prep session organised by my college, they told us that over 80% of applicants from my college get a final interview. This doesn’t really fit with the information in the ies report and so it is probably worth noting that there is significant variation across areas and, I imagine, over deadlines.

On subject preferences: I was originally selected to teach a subject that was on my least preferred list. I don’t think I was the only one either. In the end, they changed my subject assignment but just a warning that it is hard to control the outcome of your placement.

Sincere wishes of good luck and success to all of you who are going through the recruitment process now!

@kv4life You can expect a chalkboard or whiteboard. In fact, that’s the only thing to expect. I would recommend you stay away from a dance lesson or any lesson that relies too much on movement because you can’t be sure of what your space will look like. Some people do their interview in a large classroom but I know other people had to squeeze in a small office for theirs. When I was planning my 5 minute activity, I was thinking about having the “class” role-play a battle in the Civil War. But my recruiter pushed me against it. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where the layout of the room completely destroys your plan!

I’m a 4DLiner too… I’m nervous about the final interview. Anyone else interviewing in Baltimore?

anyone graduated from a Eropean University ? If so do you know of any great sites to convert european grading system to an American gpa scaling?

@bahama1898 Which grading system do you use? I heard there are a fews and the one I saw my friends used usually was the 12 points system from Denmark or something like that but heres a good website. My friends said its 99% accurate.

Another questions for any TFA expert in the house, is there a specific amount of spots TFA have to fill? or they can give as many offers as they deem appropriate? I just want to ask because i am a 4DL and it would be so much better for me if its the second scenario because if there is only a specific amount of seats then my chance would be lower lol I REALLY WANT THIS JOB!!!

@kv4life in a webinar i attended last night they said they are admitting roughly 6000 corps this year in total.

anyone interviewing in NYC on the 26th?

The general idea is that TFA is selective rather than competitive. This means that all of the applicants are not fighting against one another for a slot. If you meet the criteria that the organization sets, then you will get in. The tricky part is the placement. Since this is the last deadline, the popular regions are most likely filled, especially in subjects that are lower need (Social Studies, English). So if you are accepted now, you have a greater change to be waitlisted or be placed in a region that is considered ‘high priority’. I always recommend people at the 5dl to pay close attention to their regional preferences because your choices could be the difference between getting a placement or being waitlisted.

@natgeowild thank you  Do you have any idea how many they have admitted already? lol I just wanna see what my chance is lol and I am interviewing on the 26th too but in Chicago instead -.-
