I thought I would create a discussion thread for the 2015 corps applicants since the first application cycle begins tomorrow (August 1st). Yay!!!!! :-) I applied to the 2014 corps and made it all the way through the final interview and was unfortunately not offered a position. However, I remain optimistic and motivated to apply for the 2015 corps. Hope everyone is as excited as I am!

@cholt5, just so you know, TFA is not the only option out there! I applied (and was eventually rejected) from TFA this year, but ended up applying to and being accepted to the New York City Teaching Fellows program, which is another great program and operates similarly to TFA

@scholarsinnovate Teach for America is an organization that seeks to transform the destinies of children who reside in low income communities and cannot compete with their more affluent peers because of their education. If you would like more information, the website address is www.teachforamerica.org. Yes, it is definitely teaching related.

@jazzcatastrophe I know its not the only option out there and I’m definitely going to try a few others in addition to TFA. I’ve heard TNTP Teaching Fellows is also a great program!

Yeah, NYCTF is under the TNTP umbrella (but is more rigorous than the other TNTP programs because it required that fellows do a master’s degree). Best of luck with your re-application to TFA!

Hi there! I applied in 2013 (5th deadline) and made it through the first interview. I applied in 2014 (1st deadline) and did not get invited to the first interview! So, I am going for my third time is a charm! I really want this, and think that (hoping) since my resume was two pages and the first page did not have any of my education on it, this may have disqualified me right off the bat. So, I have redone my resume and am getting ready to apply for the 1st deadline again for 2015. I am very motivated, and hope that I get selected this time! Good Luck, Everyone!

@ssgtbam good luck to you as well! Do you think applying for the first deadline will make a difference in the selection process? I know that the only big difference between the 1st and the 2nd deadline is the date the application is actually due, which means first and second deadliners will have the same interview dates. I applied to the 5th deadline for the 2014 corps and I’m hoping that applying earlier will make a difference.

I’m excited that this thread is being made as the first deadline approaches soon be confident in your answers and responses! I was accepted into the 2014 corps for Oklahoma City Oklahoma for 9-12 English I decided to defer until 2015 for personal reasons but I am always available to answer any questions you have about anything

Well… I did it! I just submitted my application for 2015 Corps! (I did go back over my previous application and sure enough, my resume did NOT have my education information on it AT ALL!)… Guess that would be why I did not even make the first interview status last time. Better luck this time, I hope!

Glad to see there’s already a thread going. It was definitely a comfort to discuss the application process with others in the same position last year!

I, too, applied for 2014 (4th deadline) and was rejected after the final interview. I’m hoping applying 1st deadline helps me this year since I had and still have only one region in which I can teach (family obligations). I’ve also spent the past year learning as much as I can about current issues in education, particularly for low-income schools, so I feel like a better prepared applicant this time around. I wasn’t even sure I would reapply until late this summer (being rejected stung a bit) but I found that I couldn’t stop informing myself about these issues after first learning about them during last year’s application process, so when I was emailed by a recruiter in July letting me know the application was about to open up again, I realized my pride is a stupid reason to stop me from applying again. Won’t be the first time or the last that I face rejection, and it could be the beginning of an opportunity to help improve a very serious problem.

I’m interested to hear what others who are reapplying have done in the past year to improve their application, and would be happy to share what I have done if y’all are interested in knowing. I feel like, at the very least, it will be good reference information for future applicants if (when!) we’re accepted this time around. :)

@TFAKHILL379 I’ve been working on gaining more experience volunteering in low-income communities and have been working all summer tutoring adults who are trying to earn their GED’s. It has definitely been a very eye-opening experience for me. I’ve gotten to see what really happens when the education system fails these kids and they are left to a life poverty.

Anyone else getting nervous as the first deadline is getting closer? I attended two of the webinars within the past week or so, and am so fired up I can hardly wait to find out if this time I will have the chance to join the Corps.

Made it to the phone interview!!! What is everyone doing to prepare? September 20-23 seems like its so far away, but its going to get here extremely quick!!

Another program that does not provide direct teaching experience - more mentoring with inner city teens and focused on keeping kids in school - is City Year. If your applications are not successful, it might give you some additional experience to support your future TFA applications. There are programs in a number of large cities across the US. Great option for a gap year also.
