Teach for America 2016 Corps

Accepted to secondary English in Indianapolis! Both first choice!

I’ll be teaching Secondary Math in Cleveland! Both first choices, so I’m very excited! Congrats, everyone!
@RenFromCLE I assume we’ll be meeting each other at some point!

@TFAHopeful2016 ahhh, so cool! Congratulations!
Can’t wait to meet you!

I’ve been following this thread since I applied, but didn’t think I really stood a chance to get in. I got accepted to teach secondary English in Delaware  congrats everyone!

Invited to phone interview!

Hey guys! I know I’m kinda new on the thread. I just got invited to the final interview. Do any of the people who have went through the process have any suggestions on your five minute lesson?

We’re both going to do great! I’m glad I have a buddy in this process. No one else I know has ever applied to TFA. It makes me super nervous. Where are you from? @MoLoveMoGrowth

Congrats on going straight to the final, you have some time to breathe lol. This is my second time applying, I will say for the lesson. … make sure you’re organized and the lesson is simple. 5 minutes go by fast! @pioneerwoman … hopefully some 3rd deadliners join us!

Also, I’m in Wisconsin. … how about you?

North Texas! I hope so, too. When is your phone interview scheduled?

I was accepted into the 2016 corps!! I’ll be teaching secondary humanities in Massachusetts!!

I am so happy for everyone!! I didn’t get in, but there’s always next year and other programs

My interviewer never called me for my interview that was scheduled for today. I’m nervous now, because I have to squeeze it in tomorrow somehow. I work fulltime, and volunteer after work on Mondays at the library, and after my full time on Tuesdays I go straight to my part time job. Hopefully, I can leave work a little early tomorrow to make it home in time for my rescheduled time, then head back out so I can make it to the library in time. Your positive thoughts and well wishes are appreciated that this changes work out! If not, I will have to defer until next deadline which I really don’t want to do! :frowning:

I’m not sure if I should accept my offer… I love the idea of the program but so many people I know who are studying education have really negative opinions about it. I was wondering if any of you could tell me some of the reasons why you’re so excited by TFA?

Best of luck @MoLoveMoGrowth! It’s really terrible that your interviewer did not call…

Hello!
I am also a 3rd deadline-r and having a phone interview on Tuesday. I’m not very eloquent with my words so I’m just full of nerves…Good luck @MoLoveMoGrowth

@FTKBlackbird I was very hesitant about applying too because my cousins, who are both teachers at high-need schools, were highly against it…I guess it has a very bad rep among the “real” teachers who went through the traditional route.

But I still decided to apply because although I love teaching and am passionate about advocating for disadvantaged kids, all these horror stories of teachers not being able to survive high-need schools are discouraging…So I want to find out if I have what it takes to become a teacher at high-need schools or if I’ll have to give up teaching and advocate for children in other ways. And if it’s the latter, I’ll have 2 years of first-hand experience to help me be a better advocate. And I love that TFA is still supportive of TFA alumni who don’t stay as teachers but continue in other relevant fields because in the end, we all are working towards the same cause.

(I’m a recent college grad and am still figuring out my career path so I’m sure my reasons are different from seasoned professionals switching careers)

I have mixed feelings… my interview was almost an hour long and I feel like I talked too much on my answers :frowning:

Thank you @lakooh @FTKBlackbird! Also, I understand your feelings, there is much controversy around the organization. I believe the network and ability to branch out to affect change in other areas is a plus of the organization.

I’m interested because I am big at macro policy and effective change. Seeing that education is the most important pillar for the future, I want to emerge myself within its whelm. I’m unable to attend a traditional program, but I do have the experience and characteristics needed to work with children. I believe many work hard to work against the system, instead of working with the system to change.

How did it go? @lakooh … also, did you make your decision? @FTKBlackbird

bombed it…there were so many random questions that i was unprepared for:/ I’m beating myself up for it but maybe next time !
