Teach For America-2017 Corps

I put down a request to stay in Oklahoma or Texas due to special circumstances. I would be down with just about anywhere, though, if those can’t be met. My interview was a little rough. I came in under 5 minutes by a little, but I stumbled and didn’t have as much flow as I had hoped. No “rejected” code here yet, but no change anywhere else. This is going to be a long 3 days! lol

Where’s everyone from? And what do you hope to teach? I was born in CA, but raised in OK. Hoping to teach English, I think at the high school level. Teaching middle school would be fine, too. I am pursuing my M.Ed. in secondary ed right now, so anything 6-12 grades would be good.

I am from California but have been living on the east coast for a few years now. I have been teaching in private schools. I wouldn’t mind teaching middle school up to 8 grade ELA or teaching homeroom for lower grades.

I’m originally from Phoenix but I’ve lived in Oklahoma since I was about 10! I’m hoping to get back out to Phoenix just to be closer to my family. I’d love to teach Spanish, ESL, or Social Studies/History because I double majored in International Studies and Spanish, so I would feel most comfortable teaching something I actually know lol. But I’m also open to possibly teaching English and art or humanities or something along those lines. I’m hoping for high school or middle school, not sure how well I would work with younger kids lol

Two days folks!!!

Wishing everyone the bes!

Aaah! The anticipation is killing me! Two days is too long! lol
But seriously, best of luck to us all! <3

Thanks, everyone! I am hoping to be placed in North Carolina teaching any subject, but preferably English(K-8). I don’t want high school, but I have a strong feeling that’s where I will be placed since I’m an English major.

Anyone else know the deal about Transitional Funding? I am still awaiting my acceptance, but I applied for the funding. However, when I check that status, it says ‘we have not yet reviewed your app’. I wonder if they are waiting until Friday because I’m sure they know who’s been accepted.

@HopingForTFA are you applying for Transitional Funding? When I check mine it says under review,

Yes, I applied, but also still “submitted” and “we have not yet reviewed your application or documents.” I would assume we won’t see anything change there until we get the decision Friday.

@HopingForTFA Thank you! I am glad I’m not the only one. I’m so anxious!

Just an FYI re: Transitional Funding - mine was still “under review” until I received my location placement (about a week after I found out I was accepted).

Still no exit code, final eval…dang. I was hoping for a clue. One more day, guys!!!

Hey everyone, does anyone have any opinion on obtaining an online Masters from Johns Hopkins while in the corps? If i do get the job offer I wanted to make Baltimore my top choice so i could attend the school in person. However, I noticed that the corps needs people in Mississippi, and i could obtain my degree online while there. I’d really love to get the degree from Johns Hopkins, and wouldn’t mind doing it online if it doesn’t make a difference in the future. I also think that I would be much more comfortable in Mississippi than Baltimore, not to mention much more needed. Does anybody have an opinion on this matter?

You may want to contact John Hopkins directly. One more day!!! The wait has been interesting but I am so ready for this phase to be finish.

@ChukkTFA I think it would depend on what degree you are seeking as to how much the place/method you used to obtain the degree matters. If you were going for something more lucrative/competitive, i.e. law school, accounting school (and planning on working for some of the top firms in the nation, not a local smaller business), etc. it will matter more where you received the degree, or how you “attended” classes.

Well through Johns Hopkins and TFA it would be a Masters of Science in Education. I am indeed planning on attending law school, hopefully after my time as a corps member. Working at some top firm is not exactly in my agenda. I’m not profit driven, I’m hoping to work my way into a legislative or judicial position as early as possible so that I can instill a bit of pragmatism into the system (hows that for a pipe dream?). Anyways, the Johns Hopkins degree appeals to me because of the prestige attached to the school, and thus the legitimacy the degree will provide me on my resume. Online school just has a stigma attached to it, and i’d rather not fall victim to that type of thing. However, if at the end of the day my Johns Hopkins online degree holds the same weight as an in person one, I’m fine with attending online. I assume my JD is what will eventually hold the most weight on my educational resume anyhow, so perhaps I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Also, good luck everyone! The wait for a decision is absolutely NERVE RACKING.

This wait is killing me! lol

@ ChuckkTFA - TFA, and JHU alum here. The M.S in Education you earn whether in-person through taking classes at the Hopkins campus in Baltimore, or at any of TFA’s other regions (including Hawaii) is the exact same degree. The diploma, and transcripts will be identical, thus employers will not know that these courses are online.

For anyone needing a Master degree, I think it is a great option. It has certainly opened doors for me. I’d be happy to answer any questions that you, or anyone else here has about TFA, or JHU. I finished the Corps in 2014, and I did the JHU M.S partnership during my two years as a corps member. It was tough, but it helped me become a much more effective teacher.

I’m also happy to talk about my TFA experience. I know a bunch of you are eagerly awaiting the decisions that go out today, and I wish you all the best of luck!
