Teach For America- 2018 Corps

Congrats to everyone that was accepted!! I was accepted for the previous deadline after a few attempts of applying so don’t give up! I also recommend checking out City Year to help you gain more experience, they also work in low-income schools and have a similar mission to TFA. You also have a higher chance of getting in TFA if you do City Year. I’m in it now and it’s a great experience

@ymt017 can i ask you about City Year? I got offered a position with them but im contemplating. Can I have your email?

@Tee201824 sure! just sent you a message!

This is absolutely a dream come true. Congrats everyone.

Where does everyone want to go? What does everyone want to teach?

Hey everyone! Does anyone have information about Relay Graduate School? If I were to complete my masters during TFA through them, how often would I go to class? I know a majority of the degree is completed online. What is the workload like? How many hours a week would I need to dedicate towards the courses? Thanks for the help!

I got in!!! I can’t believe it

Congratulations to everyone who got in! I feel like I’m repeating myself every deadline so sorry if you’ve already read this, but I got in 2nd deadline and I will be teaching elementary school in Chicago. At this point, I’ve passed my certification exam, I’m finishing up applying to Relay Graduate School (where everyone in Chicago studies), and in May I will be interviewing with principals.

If you have any questions at all moving forward, please let me know! Preferencing locations can be super daunting, so I can try to help with that. Or if you have questions about Chicago or elementary specifically, I can try to help with that too.

@FutureLawyerNY I’m pretty sure Relay does things slightly differently in each campus; for Chicago there are two in-person weeknight sessions a month and one Saturday session a month in addition to a two-week session each summer. The rest is online. This link will let you choose the campus you’re interested in, and from there you can click “Master’s of Arts in Teaching” (which is the degree you’d be getting) and it should give more details: https://www.relay.edu/campuses

Now the wait begins for city placement…

Anybody choose DC or Baltimore for a HP area?

For those of you who have done, or are currently doing, your regional preferences, is it simply the region as a whole, or can you also select cities? For example, the Colorado region includes three separate cities. Would it simply say Colorado or would it say Denver, C Springs, and Pueblo?

@HopingForTFA2019 it’s the region as a whole. Then with subregions, if there are any, you can list you preference level.Regions with subregions still counts as the one preference region.

@goldenbear17 Thank you very much!

@HopingForTFA2019 Of course! The interview was on the UIUC campus on Green St, in the “career center suites”. Plenty of parking and there’s a lot of bus routes that go right by it too! I’m from Champaign, so if you need hotel/food/whatever recommendations lmk. Good luck on your interview!

Hey y’all!

I was accepted D2 and I will be teaching middle school science in Arkansas! I took both of my teaching certification exams, and I just found out that I passed my first one! (When you teach middle school in Arkansas you have to be certified in two subjects, so I chose math as my other subject, although I will be teaching middle school science.)

In Arkansas and other southern regions, you won’t be hired by a district until Institute, the summer training. That’s a slight inconvenience, but on the bright side housing is covered during institute in my region, so I won’t have to worry about finding a place to live with 2 other TFA folks until sometime during Institute. (Apparently you spend a weekend looking for housing and bam- you’ve got a place to live.)

If anyone has questions about middle school science, the Praxis exam (teacher certification exam I took), or about the Western Mass sub-region (I currently attend college in Western Mass), just shoot me a message! Also if y’all have questions about what it feels like to move halfway across the country when all of your family lives in New England and you’ve never been to Arkansas, I’m here to chat. I’d love to chat! Also, remember that your recruiter is a wicked valuable resource, and you should use them whenever you have questions.

Anybody interested in LA or San Antonio?

@jmmillr8 Thank you very much! I’m definitely getting ahead of myself, as I don’t even hear back about an interview until Friday! But if I (fingers crossed!) do get an interview, I will most definitely be asking for some good food recommendations!! (:

I really like food, so please don’t make fun of me for being curious and asking this random (and sort of unimportant) question:
They say all meals are provided during summer institute - does anyone know what the food is like?

I have two questions. Can anyone tell me what I should expect from transitional funding? Also did anyone have a family or children they are bringing with them?

@Hope2DoWell lol not a bad question at all; my assumption is it varies by institute. I know for Chicago they haven’t even finalized all the details for institute yet so I don’t think even the regional people know for sure what it’ll be. I’m hoping it’s real food or a food stipend or something and not out of a cafeteria.

@SacredMirrorTFA I got much less from transitional funding than I anticipated/hoped for, but some people seem to get a decent amount. The application is fairly straightforward, so it’s worth applying regardless of the outcome.

Do anyone know if you have to verify you’re special circumstances with documentation.Im willing to I just want to know in advance
