Teach For America- 2018 Corps

I just got an email inviting me to an interview! Admissions told me yesterday that we wouldn’t hear until after 6pm EST today so I’m a little surprised lol

Same! I’m so excited!! Congratulations…And glad I found this group as we go through the process together. That’s also good news for anyone who hasn’t heard yet, 6pm EST.

Hi everyone! I have not been active on this website for awhile, but I wanted to get plugged in again to join this thread. Did any of you get an email about a 30 min phone call with TFA? I got that email yesterday and then got invited to the final interview today and I’m just trying to figure out what they have to do with each other.

@studyingsenior I got an email about that phone call before I had even turned in my application. It was with a recruiter who shared their experience as a corps member and asked me about my background/future plans/why I wanted to join TFA. It’s more like a guidance/informational conversation, not part of the application/interview process, and I’ve been able to text that recruiter with any questions I come up with about TFA

Hey Guys, are you going to sign up for in-person or virtual interviews?

Personally, I am probably going to sign up for an in person, just because it makes me feel more comfortable.

I ended up signing up for a virtual interview after I realized that there were no in person interviews in my city.

I’ve got my in person interview next Thursday.

What does everyone think about using exit slips as the “you do” portion of the teaching lesson?

@magletir12 I think that’s a really good idea. Just make sure that if the “student” gets the answer wrong, that you know how to respond. TFA interviewers are always looking how you handle wrong answers by students!

If we are bringing materials for our sample lesson, what should we bring them in? I was going to use my backpack but I don’t know if that will look unprofessional. What do you guys think? or for anyone who has already had their interview, what were people using?

I’m so excited to have discovered this feed. The second deadline is around the corner. Im looking forward to hearing and sharing. Blessings going up!

I am curious, does anyone know who makes the final TFA decision? Is it our interviewers or is it someone higher up?

@futurespi I’m sorry I do not know. I was wondering that myself.

How does everyone feel about their interviews? Have you started thinking about places/subjects that you would like to teach?

I asked my interviewer this question and she said that she will make a recommendation – yes or no – and then an algorithm determines whether you are a good fit for the corps. Then a higher up will look at both your interviewer’s recommendation and the algorithm and make a decision based on that. If the two disagree, they will discuss it amongst themselves and then consult another higher up if needed.

@tfa2018hopeful Wow, thank you so much for all of that information! I’m glad someone was on top of that question. Good luck!!

How did everyone’s interviews go? I had mine today and could not get a good read on the interviewer during the 1 on 1 so I’m not sure how I’m feeling about it. Now comes the waiting part which is the hardest!

I’m honestly not sure either. My sample teach and group interview went as expected, but the one-on-one could have gone either way. My interviewer told me that I gave her the chills because my passion was so clear. She nodded and smiled a lot. She also said something about my “staying in teaching” even though I didn’t give her any indication that I would still teach if I’m not accepted. I don’t want to look too much into this because I just don’t know.

Also my timeline is already gone. But I heard this part doesn’t matter.

Sounds like yours definitely went well! I really got no indication from my interviewer whatsoever. I think my lesson plan went really well though so we will see!

When was your interview? And what do you mean by the timeline?
