Teach For America- 2018 Corps

Got Memphis teaching elementary! So excited!

@teachingitup mine just says “you’ll teach secondary biology (grades 6 - 12) in the Bay Area, in the Oakland community”

Im teaching biology (9-12)! How about you? So far I don’t have too many questions but if I think of any I’ll definitely reach out…have to go through all of the info they sent

@megk11 Awesome! I’m doing elementary. If anything does come up please let me know!

@teachingitup I know some regions (not sure about Delaware) don’t assign subregions until later in the process (like during hiring). I’m sure the Delaware regional team can give you more specifics about that!

Hey! @jmmillr8 I got memphis too!! Teaching English to grades 6-12!

@booknerd2018 Awesome!! I’ve been reading through the regional guide and it seems like they have a real focus on incorporating social justice into their programming. Can’t wait for institute!

Well, I got Kansas city-early childhood

Have you guys confirmed your offer yet or are you waiting to talk to your recruiter?

Accepted my offer yesterday morning for Cleveland and middle school STEM! Both were my first choices!!

I’m waiting until I speak to the Memphis staff member, just so I can get a better idea of what the region is like! I’m fairly certain I’m going to accept, I just want to make sure I get all of the information before I do.

I got way too excited so I accepted my offer right after I saw it was in the Bay hahaha (then I told my parents and they were like yeah confirm it) ;))

Hello everyone! I recently found this discussion and I am super pumped reading all of the success stories! I am so hopeful about mine too. I have my final interview this Wednesday and I am reallly nervous but all really excited! If there are any tips or recommendations for the interview I would love to hear them! I’m more nervous for the one-on-one interview just because I do not know what to expect and what they will ask. I have two STAR method stories that I could use, but do you think I need more?

Hi All!

I have a question concerning TFA’s acceptance rate.

I know that the overall acceptance rate for the program is 15%. TFA states that over half of all applicants identify as people of color. Also, a little under half (49%) of accepted applicants are people of color. More specifically, 17% are African African Americans.

My question is, given these numbers, do minority applicants, (African American applicants in particular) have an increased chance of being admitted to the program given TFA’s goal to diversify their profile every year?

The actual number of African American prospective applicants isn’t provided, so I’m unable to determine the actual acceptance rate of just African American applicants, but it appears that minority applicants, especially those from low-income backgrounds, etc may have an advantage in the application process when it comes to being accepted.

What are your thoughts?

@ElizabethShk Hi! I was accepted early admission first deadline for the 2018 corps. While I don’t identify as a POC, I came from a very low income background. During my interview and during the process, I never felt there was an emphasis on my SES, but rather my grit and determination. I think TFA looks for applicants who are qualified in many ways. People who are organized, have great leadership, determined, hard-working, and I would argue to some extent, have the ability to build meaningful relationships with kids. Being that TFA works with an overwhelmingly minority and low income population, I’m sure that they look to employ people who look like their students. I think being a minority presents a whole other level of challenges they must over come, based on systematic racism and oppression in the U.S., which builds POC with another layer of grit that white people cannot understand becasue of their experiences. However, I would not go out on a limb so say TFA recruits and hires people just becasue they are black. TFA does not have a certain amount of spots and everyone has to fight for it, they hire as many people as they feel qualified to, which means, if it came down to two well qualified applicants, one black and one white, with leadership experience and passion, I don’t think that the color of their skin could determine who gets accepted out of the two. I am happy to further discuss this if you have any questions! Additionally, I am not qualified to give an opinion here, as none of us are. I think the answers you are looking for can only come from a TFA staff only.

Is anyone else interviewing this week for 2019 Early Admission?

Hi! I just joined this thread, I had my interview last week in NYC!! How did yours go?

Welcome, @2019tfahopeful! My interview could not have gone any better! So, even if I don’t get accepted I’ll know that I did my best. How did yours go??? I think I’m more excited than I am nervous now!

Thank you! And my interview was good, I enjoyed every minute of it to my surprise! I hope I get accepted, but if not i tried my best! How have you been passing the time???

@2019tfahopeful that’s great! Best of luck to you!! I work full time and am a full time student, so that keeps me quite busy. Plus, preparing for grad school in case I’m not accepted. I hope the waiting isn’t eating you up!

Thats great! Do you know where you would want to be placed if accepted?? The waiting is eating me alive but I’m trying to stay occupied as best as I can… :))
