Teach For America- 2018 Corps

@TFAApplicant2019 I highly doubt they will ask you to prove you have a car. It’s the responsibility of the corps member to select regions that have requirements that fit their needs. So not having a car in a place that requires one could be bad. Ubers are not always readily available, and if you end up teaching in a school district outside of the major city, or even in a rural area, you’re going to have a hard time getting to and from work. I dont know how many Ubers you’ll find at 530-6 AM every day. But obviously it’s totally up to you and what you’re comfortable with!

@TFAApplicant2019 They won’t check if you have a car or anything, but having a car is highly encouraged in most areas. The schools TFA works with, even in cities with extensive public transportation, often aren’t located near train or bus stops. I also don’t have a car, so choosing a city with semi-reliable public transportation was pretty important to me. It’s up to you to eventually figure out how to get to work every day. I would be cautious about relying on Ubers being cheaper (I had considered that, too) because in big cities, especially around rush hour when everyone is trying to get to work, they can be super expensive. But ultimately it’s all up to you!

Anyone else change their regional preferences at the last minute? At about 10:30 I logged on real quick and swapped some places out lol! How is everyone feeling now that choices are locked into place?

Where did everyone go? Lol Is anyone nervous about finding out regional assignments Monday?

Hi @TFAmemphis18! I’m actually much more calm than I thought I would be. I liked my listings and I know the regions I can accept and the regions that I will most likely need to deny if offered. Somehow this wave of calm has washed over me!! How are you holding up? Did you ever speak to anyone about why Memphis wasn’t an option for you?

@HopingForTFA2019 yes, I spoke with someone and they saw that I mentioned in the pre-assignment form that I needed to stay in Memphis. I’m hoping they honor my special circumstances and that’s the only reason I’m nervous.

@TFAmemphis18 I hope they do!! From what I’ve seen they’re pretty good at honoring location special circumstances. Where else did you list?

@HopingForTFA2019 I listed Houston next because I just moved from there in December & wouldnt mind going back if I absolutely had to. I also put San Antonio and anywhere in North Carolina as highly preferred.

@TFAmemphis18 I included San Antonio and Houston on my list, too. Keep us updated on your special circumstance, I hope it works out for you!

After conducting more research on the the regional placements, I found out we are not done interviewing because we sill have to interview with schools in our regions. Makes me kind of nervous about finding a job come august since I am in the 2018 corps! But I am hoping if we can make it through TFA’s hiring process we can make it through anything haha

@heather2230 yes we have to interview again, but I heard it is not as difficult as the TFA hiring process. If I can remember correctly one of the TFA staff members told me that they find the schools for us. The principals know that we are from TFA so they take that into consideration as many of us do not have a background “degree” in education.

Today is the day!! Hopefully they don’t take all day to post!

Today is the day!! I’m nervous and excited!

I am super nervous about placements. Anyone else put SC as their number 1?

@TFAorStatGrad I did not put SC as my number 1, but it was on my list. Out of curiosity, do you know how much pull corps members have with more specified placements in SC? It covers so many different areas and it’s a bit worrisome to me to not know exactly where you would go.

I am hoping I get philly, #1, special circumstance. Lets see how good they are with honoring special circumstance

I am honestly begging that they will honor it, I am worried about my family if I get placed somewhere else.

I have no idea and I am worried about that as well. I am really hoping for the low country because that is where I live right now rent free. If I have to move to midlands I would rather be placed in my other highly preferred choices. It may just be that they are flexible enough to place you in any region in SC you prefer.

@nutter398 Good luck! I hope they do. Was Philly a very popular area for applicants?

@TFAorStatGrad I hope you’re right. I can’t accept SC if they can’t ensure a specific location, unfortunately. My husband has to be able to continue with his career wherever we go, and rural South Carolina will not be the place for that. I would be fine if it was near Columbia or Charleston, but anywhere else would not be easy on us.
