Teach For America - 2020 Corps

@TFAViolet congratulations! That is the exact placement I was hoping for, may I ask what factors you had that helped you gain the placement?

Congratulations everyone!

@tfarican20 Hey! I’m not entirely sure. It was probably a combination of really relating to struggling high school students and my high school history centered lesson plan. I’d be willing to bet it was more about how I relate and understand the large problems many low income high schoolers deal with though. I talked about my high school experience and my teachers that helped me through real times of struggle a lot throughout my interview.

It could also just be entirely random! Where did you get and what subject?

@TFAViolet I got 6-12 social studies. I am currently certified to teach 6-12 social studies, had my internship in a low income high school in my community. I also did my lp on high school social studies topic.

I got into New Orleans which was my number five pick. I placed NYC as #1. I’m still extremely grateful, but I’m on the fence about NOLA.

@TFA2020 hey, I saw that you were reassigned, can you advise as to the process you went through?

Hey @TFAViolet ! First off, congratulations on your acceptance! So I just want to explain your placement as I had the same concern. I’m also going to be a part of the NYC 2020 Corps. History is your first placement. Special Education is your secondary placement and will only be used as a backup. They wouldn’t switch you over to your secondary placement without telling you either, so don’t worry about that.

Can anyone advise on how much I can “involve” the class in the lesson? Like can I call on them or ask them questions? I dont want to plan for it and then nobody replies to me haha.

@tfaonlyaccount during the lesson part, the interviewers highly encourage everyone to participate and for the most part someone will answer your question bc it looks good to participate. It’s also encouraged for people to answer questions incorrectly to see how you would react to a student that doesn’t understand the concept so dont worry about no one answering

Anyone interviewing Tuesday? Or in the coming week? How are y’all feeling?

@tfarican20 Hi! I don’t know if you ended up accepting your offer, but I am inquiring about region reassignment currently due to health circumstances for a family member. I just reached out to the contact section on my portal and am waiting to hear back about how I would go about the process. Did you have any luck?

Has anyone put a high need region as their top choice and NOT gotten that city?

Does region preferences affect admissions at all?

Additionally, I was considering putting New Mexico and South Dakota on the list. Has anyone been placed there or know anyone who has?

@Writer4change I put a high need region as my 5th choice and was placed there, so I think there’s a good chance you would get into that region if it was your first choice. My regional contact basically explained to me that where you’re placed has to do with where you’re most needed according to the rankings on your list.

@tfaonlyaccount TFA says your preferences don’t have an impact on your acceptance on their website, so I would hope that your preferences do not affect your chances. I would imagine the only time your preferences would matter in regards to acceptance is if all of your preferred regions are full, and they have no where to put you. That would probably be extremely rare though, and they’d probably still accept you anyway but maybe not in your preferred region.

@futureteach2k20 hi! I ended up being reassigned! I had a family situation that required it, so I worked with my original placement region and my recruiter. I ended up accepting once I got my reassignment!

Any other 4th deadline people super anxious about decisions coming out on the 16th? Also how did everyone else navigate the classroom preferences rankings? I only put one subject that I had a high preference for, 2 that I had a preference for, and all the rest were low preference

I am super anxious to find out on the 16th!! How did your interview? I’ve been trying to find people who did the 4th deadline as well

My interview did not go particularly well, but everything else about my app was solid so we will see!

Congratulations on your acceptance! I am a junior in college and looking into applying next year. What qualities do you think contributed to your acceptance into the program and what advice would you have for someone interested in this opportunity?

@Writer4change why do you say it didn’t go well? I also felt iffy about my interview because I couldn’t read my interviewer. She kept complimenting me but I’m not sure if that’s part of what they have to do haha
