Teacher gave me detention and I have the option to override it...

My teacher gave me detention because I was doing homework from another subject in her class. She wasn't teaching and we were working on laptops on another project.

I personally think it's a stupid reason, but I can see how she would see this as being disrespectful and have no problem with fulfilling the detention. However, my GC gave me the option to override it.

At first, my teacher took away my hw (which happened to be a very important physics lab) but then gave it back at the end of the period instead of ripping it up like she has done to other people in the past. As I was walking out, however, she specifically said "I'm giving you back your homework but you should still 'serve your time' in detention."

I know that if I override the detention I will most likely ruin my relationship with this teacher (which granted isn't anything special but it's not bad either). I also have a project due this week that can be graded VERY subjectively. Should I just take the detention? It's really inconvenient for me this week seeing as I won't be in school two of those days and one of those things on one of those days requires a lot of preparation after school this week. I'm so conflicted. Help! Should I take the detention?

PS. I also don't know when my detention is yet. I'm generally a good kid and many people were surprised that someone like me would get detention.

Override the detention. If it was me. You have the power, see the consequences of both actions.

Take the detention.

Do not ruin your relationship with teachers, especially if you are a humanities student.

Are you going to have this teacher next year? Are you ever going to ask her for recommendations? If you can use her, take the detention. If not, override it.

don’t be a wimp and worry about the relationship with her
override it and if the relationship goes bad, make it up for it with something else.
bring in an apple or something.

You should always stand up for yourself cus there isn’t anyone else who’d do that for you later on.

Detention’s actually pretty awesome. I get so much homework done. If they let us listen to iPods, it’d be perfect.
But, since you don’t want to go, unless she’d definitely find out and she’s one of the few teachers who could write your recs, I’d override it. What’s the point of having the ability to override if you don’t use it?

explain to the teacher your issue and tell her nicely that you will override it and that she shouldnt take offense since it is a personal time constraint issue

Take the detention. Teachers are allowed to give you detention for doing pretty much anything wrong, and you kind of were. However, it seems like your teacher likes you, so if you are busy you could probably arrange it for some other time.

You can ask her nicely if she can take it back…but in all seriousness, it’s only a detention. It won’t kill you.

Detention can’t be that bad, it’s just like a studyhall for 1-2 hours long–but u can’t sleep, eat or listen to your Ipod :[

I got my very first detention a week & a half ago…because i’m always late to my first hour class…but i’m going to suck it up.

Override it.

I’m kind of leaning toward keeping it. They can’t make me stay home from a field trip to go to detention can they? I haven’t even gotten the date yet which is weird though since I was assigned the detention on Friday.

PS. She isn’t writing ANY recs this summer because she’s having knee surgery next week, resulting in her leaving after this Friday. Waiting to override it until after she leaves is also an option but honestly I’m not THAT deceitful.

If it goes on your permanent record, then override it. If not, I see no harm in taking it other than an inconvenience.

I’m 99% sure it doesn’t go on my permanent record.
