Got first detention today and panicking

So today during school I received my first detention from a teacher. I was at my locker getting my books when a teacher told me that I should be in my classroom because teachers were taking attendance. So he asked for my ID card which I did and next period I was sent to the office to get a detention. Now I know I was technically not following the guidelines but I find it horrible that while I get a detention, I notice 10 people across the hall doing the exact thing I was and are getting away (my locker is closest to the staircase). What I'm really trying to ask is that will this affect me in any way during college admissions. I'm kind of panicking because I see how perfect other people are in my school and I want to aim high for college (maybe ivy leagues, etc). Will they see this?

Stop it! Getting a detention for missing the bell will not prevent you from going to a good college. Oy vey…

^^^ This

I’ve heard seniors say that though… Though maybe you’re right.

I see this scenario: Harvard admissions officer looking at skyisover’s application: “Hmm, let’s see, perfect grades, 15 AP’s, president of his class every year, quarterback of the state champion football team, founded a social networking website that analysts see as a threat to Facebook, United Way citizen of the year for the last 4 years, rescued 3 children from a burning building last week—uh, oh, he got detention once! Moving on, he’s not our kind…”

Detention does not get noted on your hs record.
You do not have to confess detentions on applications.
You DO have to address and explain any hs suspensions and expulsions on college apps.

My daughter got a detention for wearing a low cut dress (conservative dress code) and she still managed to get into some excellent colleges. She’ll be attending Wellesley in the fall, and will most likely be bringing the infamous dress with her.

Like you, she freaked out about the detention. This only proves that you have high standards for yourself, and that is what colleges want to see.

Ba-bye Princeton, hello Anytown Community College! Just kidding…Seriously tho’, you need to relax a little bit if you have any hope of making it to college without giving yourself a ulcer before you get there.

Don’t worry. Detention isn’t meant to screw up your chances of getting into college. It’s meant to warn you, basically. It’s all for your “best interest”.

You’ll be fine.

As a teacher, I always worried much more about kids who never got detention than about kids who got one every now and again.

I used to have a colleague who told a story about getting pulled over by a state trooper. He said, “I told the cop, ‘You know, I was just keeping up with the rest of the traffic.’ The cop glanced at my license and then said, ‘Lemme ask you a question, Mr. Harris. You ever go duck hunting?’ I said, ‘Sure. What’s your point?’ And the cop said, ‘You get one, but all the others get away.’ I nodded. And he wrote the ticket.”

Stuff like that happens.

No one cares about detentions. Just don’t get yourself expelled or something.

OP: poster #8 has the best advice for you. You seriously need to try to calm down.

I’m shocked people actually use their lockers…don’t even know where mine is in the school…

Congratulations on getting detention. Nobody likes perfect people because they tend to be rather fragile. Getting detention gives you a chance to toughen up and deal with the unfairness of it all. Experience it. Feel it. Bask in it. Let it hurt. Survive it. You can do it. It’s an excellent growth opportunity. I’m not being sarcastic.

You know after reading this I do feel better, especially after I met the person supervising it and mentioned that colleges won’t see it. But I’m just curious will this be detrimental to any things like school clubs, leadership, NHS, etc. Anyway I guess I really don’t care that much anymore. But my parents do, so I have to keep going back to the office and arguing for them to take back my detention. LOL for parents.

My son is occasionally late to school. Every now and then, he gets a detention for it. He has not changed which schools he’s applying to because of it. Chill. Your parents should chill also.
