Im a bit confused. I have had the privlege of seeing some of my teacher reccs (they showed me) and they checked "reccommend enthusiastically" and "one of the top students in my career" but.....my GC hardly knows me and might not be as impressed as teachers who have met me and interacted with me. Do colleges weight the GC's recc less since they usually know the kids less. My class is 508 kids and my GC knows me, but maybe not enough to say "top in career" or "top few ever". Am I at a disadvantage? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've had the same problem. My school only has 1300 students, but we only have 2 guidance counselors (Canadian school-- GCs usually don't have to write recommendations). I called my ED school and they told me to get the the counselor to fill it out anyway, but if inadequate information is provided, you can send in a supplementary recommendation from an employer or a 3rd teacher who knows you very well. So, I sent in the lukewarm GC recomendation along with another recommendation from my employer for the past 4 yrs. I also included a note explaining the situation at my school.

Hope that helped :). Good luck!

Guidance counselor recs are relatively unimportant in most cases. They just put your statistics in the context of your school, and your school's profile puts your school in the context of the country's high schools.

Now, if your guidance counselor can confirm some of your activities and achievements, and can show your ability, that helps as well. Make it tolerable, and your amazing teacher recs will come through.
