Do you think it is okay to have a teacher recommendation from a ninth grade teacher? It would be a really good and insightful rec...have maintained a relationship with the teacher in the last few years. I know most colleges prefer junior year teachers, so would they look down upon this significantly? Thanks.

I think if it’s supplemental, it will be okay. It’s also probably alright in other circumstances - I have attended an online high school for the past two years, so my ninth and tenth grade teachers know me much better than my eleventh and twelfth grade ones.

Personally, I think that unless this teacher -really- knows you better than your junior/senior teachers, you should really go with a more current teacher. A person changes in 3 years. Though you have maintained a relationship, academic habits aren’t easily noticed just through occasional conversations.

And a teacher doesn’t have to know you a really long time to write a good rec. I had my senior year teacher (who had only known me for 3 months) write a rec, and I got into my dream school.
