Is it okay if the two teachers who will write my recommendation letters are both from the same subject field- science (one was my chemistry teacher and the other was my physics teacher). As a person who wants to focus on the sciences in college I feel as though my high school courses don’t exactly reflect that interest as I’ve only taken one science AP and all of my other AP’S were from the Humanities Department. In order to try and balance this out, I thought having my recommendation letters from my science teachers would be the best way to go. Especially since they are the one’s who know me the best and are the people I have really great relationships with. What do you all think?
Thank You!
For most schools it will be fine. Most important is that these are the teachers that know you well. Schools that require 2 recommendations often say from two different subjects, which yours are. Depending on your major, some will say at least one from…(e.g. science/math).
However there are schools that will say the teachers should be from different academic areas. In this case I don’t think your choices would be ideal. In general, I think this is the best strategy in any case, and what I recommend to my own kids. I think it is a good thing to show that teachers from different academic disciplines know you well and they will tend to comment on different academic/personal strengths, revealing more about you.
So, you need to know what the schools you are applying to require or “recommend”. You may need to consider a math or humanities teacher. If your school allows it, you could ask 3 teachers, and designate which recommendations go to which schools based on that school’s requirement. But only ask for them if you know that you need them. Asking a teacher to put in that effort, and then not even using it would be wrong.
