I know that there is that large thread about this, but my questions aren't particularly how to ask, and instead how the process works.

Like suggested, I want to give my teachers the whole summer to write the recommendations. So first, does it matter what subjects my teachers teach? If its non-specified, can I ask two History teachers? I probably won't, but, would there be a disadvantage with that? And how important is it to have the teachers be from the recent year. I've interacted more with teachers my freshman year, and the last two years, there haven't been any notable favorites. Will this gap put me at a disadvantage?

Also, how exactly should I tell my teachers which schools to send to, do I just hand them a list of names? I don't even now 100% myself, so can I just ask them to write them now, and then give them a list of schools later? And if its all online, do I still have to provide mailing addresses?

I know this is stuff I should talk to my counselor about, but I have only a few days before summer, and I thought this would be quicker. Thanks guys.

Colleges usually like to see what subject the teacher instructs. So to have two recommendations from two History teachers might be a little much. I’d say it’d be better to have one from one History teacher and one English teacher (if those are your strongest subjects, I mean). Colleges also usually like to see recommendations from junior or senior year teachers, but this is often not required. It’s just recommended to do, since junior and senior year are closer to your college years.

For my teacher recommendation, I have to send her envelopes addressed to each of the colleges I’m applying to. I then assume that she’ll write them and send them off to each college on her own. She’s moving away this year so that might be why, but I’m not exactly sure of the process myself.

Agree that it would be nice to have 2 different subject areas, but I think getting the best LORs possible is more important.

Each HS varies, so you should definitely ask your GC for the final word on how your system works. Teachers won’t need your list of schools until next fall, if they work on the LOR this summer it will just be generic anyway. For the colleges that are done online, they won’t need mailing addresses.

Frankly, you should ask teachers who are experienced (i.e. successful in having students admitted to top colleges) be your writers. Some aren’t good LOR writers even if they mean to do well by you.
