Sorry if this is a stupid question, but...when I ask teachers for Common App recommendations, what am I supposed to tell them to do? How does the process work exactly?
I can't complete the Education section of the Common App because my second-semester classes aren't scheduled yet, which means I can't access the "assign recommenders" stuff.

Your teachers, provided they’re not first-year teachers, should know exactly what to do since they’ve been through the process before. Just let them know that you’re applying via the Common App (and/or whatever other apps you’re using) for insert school names here Universities and ask them if they would write you a recommendation.

When they say yes, ask them if they need anything from you (many schools require a brag sheet or resume, and your teacher might want additional materials such as papers you wrote or your admissions essay). Then let them know that you’ll invite them to the Common App and that you really appreciate them writing you a letter.

As for the Education section, I’m sure that you’re not the only person with this situation. However, you will need to complete the section in order to invite recommenders. I suggest that you fill the section out with the courses you are likely to take next semester, but I’m not really sure if that’s the right thing to do in this case. Whenever you do finish the section, though, make sure that you waive your right to read the recommendations.

Good luck!

I don’t really want to do this because what I take next semester is highly dependent on how well I do in the classes I’m currently taking.
Would it be okay if I just submitted the Education section with what I know I’m taking? Would I be able to edit it later after the recommendations were done?

Yes, it’s fine to edit information on your app, including your courses, after you invite recommenders. You should definitely get moving on that so you can invite recommenders this week.
