Ok, so I was just wondering if the teachers you ask for recommendations HAVE to be related to your prospective major, or have to be academic core teachers? Like in my situation...

I'm planning on going into computer engineering, and I asked a science research teacher (or science teacher) and a band teacher. I don't think it'll be too bad for most of the schools I'm applying to since they only require 1 recommendation but some allow up to 3; however, one of my schools is also Vanderbilt, which also apparently requires 2 recommendations. Now I'm worried that the band teacher recommendation will hurt my admissions chances. Additionally, I'm worried that when I submit my applications and the letters are submitted, only one will actually be read and some colleges will pick the band teacher, further hurting my admission chances. Any advice?

For Vandy, you definitely want your 2nd LOR to be from an academic core course – there’s no other wise course.

For those that require one, and they happen to read the band one, I’m sure they’ll look at the next one, hoping to find a core teacher. I would n’t sweat that.

@T26E4 yeah, I know. I just hope I can get my counselor recommendation to save me here (my previous guidance counselor moved to another school, and my new counselor also happens to be my AP Chem teacher, if that helps at all) or another recommendation at the last minute (I’m applying RD) but also want scholarships so basically Dec 1 is my deadline

Now given that the 2nd LOR has to be from a core teacher, is it too late if I ask another teacher now? I might have said it above, but again, I’m applying to Vandy RD and he could be a plus to some of my other RD applications, maybe even some of my EA’s
