Well my class graduated and now that we have finishe high school, some of my friends have started friending the teachers who have facebooks. Since we have graduated and are no longer their students do you guys think this is appropriate or inappropriate? I would love to keep in contact with some of my teachers while in college and think this would be a good way to do so.

I have already. I feel its a good way to keep in touch, especially if you cant go and visit them

Many of my teachers told us the rules before we left. If other students have friended them, then it’s obviously fine. Totally appropriate. I had some teachers that said we could add them at 21. Others who said it was fine the day after graduation. I’m a rising senior in college and still keep in touch with a lot of my old teachers via fb.

i have some friends that are teachers (in their 20s) and some of them are friends with graduated students.

you can always friend them, and if they don’t want to accept, they won’t. Depends on how they choose to use facebook. If they only use it for close friends and family, then they are unlikely to accept.

I am a teacher, and my rule is that former students can friend me AFTER they are no longer my students (this is also in line with district policy). I love keeping in touch with these kids once they leave my classroom, and I actually sometimes seek their advice when deciding whether to keep or throw out certain parts of my curriculum. I am, however, cognizant of the fact that I have many former students on my friends list, so I’m careful about what I post - and I make sure other friends are aware of this fact as well.

Most teachers I know that friend former students have 2 Facebook pages, one for their real life and one for former students :D. Our kids are friends with one current teacher but that page is only for information for that class other than that, they don’t friend teachers in our school until after they graduate. I think that is fine as they former students are now “adults” and like you said, it’s a good way to keep in touch with former teachers because you may need them for a job reference, scholarship, etc.

It should be okay after you have graduated. What a tribute to your teachers that you want to stay in touch with them. Back in the olden days, you just stayed in touch via email. In the dinosaur era, you had to write letters, address an envelope, and then attach a stamp to it.
