Teachers won't write recommendations

What do I do? Teachers have not had a contract for 2 years... to avoid the work stoppage loop hole they are withholding recommendations. One sneaked one in for my son and said don't tell. Guidance will not mail their package without complete recommendations. My guidance counselor is in a tough spot. I am about to go to principal as other people have. I hate alienating people when I have younger children but this is ridiculous. My husband says find another teacher. He doesn't understand it is like a strike... no teacher wants to cross the picket line. Do I contact my son's EA and ED colleges. Doesn't that make my school look bad. All this stress and I am waiting for a recommendation that he asked for last year... Some one looked into suing school but I guess they don't have too since it is not in their contract. I think it is lousy to take this out on students.
Any ideas??? without making enemies.

This happened in our town a few years ago. No contract so the teachers were refusing. What changed it was a few parents made it public knowledge…went to the local newspapers about it. Once a newspaper article was written about it, things slowly changed.

Meanwhile kids were scrambing trying to a sympathetic teacher, athletic director, principal, asst. principal etc to write the recommendations.

We have a new principal this year and I am on his advisory committee. Too bad the first meeting isn’t till next week, but believe me if it comes down to it I will say invite my son to your office…talk to him… look at his transcript and write a recommendation for him. My guidance counselor knows if something doesn’t happen by Friday I will be in his office. I feel bad for her because she is in a tough spot. Everyone is complaining.
Sad to know that this happens though. shouldn’t be taking anything out on the kids. Luckily one teacher put one in for him but she had to tell guidance “don’t tell anyone I did this” how sad.

I would think of outside evaluators who would write recommendations, and then include information about the situation in your supplementary info. I would consider calling the colleges individually to see what to do.
