Technology necessities for college

I just received my first laptop and I absolutely love it. However, I do not know all the other things technology-wise I will need for my dorm. I don't have a printer or even a bag for my laptop so anything else you can recommend will be much appreciated. I have an ultrabook if that helps. I am looking for hardware and software btw.

If your dorm has community printers, consider using them instead.

In all honesty, a laptop and cell phone is all you really need. Any other tech just makes your life easier, and you can get them once you know you need them.

Personally, the following helped:

1.) Laser printer. The time saved by just hitting the print button really makes things much easier. It’s allowed me to do assignments last minute, etc.

2.) Wireless router. It’s nice to have the ability to use your laptop reliably anywhere in your room and it’s vicinity (common spaces). Yeah, there might be shared WiFi, but the signal strength isn’t always strong.

Laptop, cellphone, usb flashdrive not really an electronic, but whatever…

Printers really aren’t necessary, although they are helpful. Your campus library and other buildings (usually all including dorms) generally have printers, and if your school is like mine, part of your money spent is specifically for a certain number of printable pages. I bought a printer anyway, because I knew with my procrastinating tendencies there would be times when I wouldn’t finish a paper until 10 minutes before class, so I wouldn’t have time to get to an on campus printer. But otherwise I try to use the provided printers since I have printing credit anyway. My printer is for late assignment emergencies.

Otherwise… I don’t believe anyone really has much of anything else when it comes to electronics. The only other thing I’ve seen is the occasional ipad/tablet but even that’s rare.

A small USB flashdrive, an external harddrive to backup your entire computer (as well as store unnecessary files like movies & music to keep your comp running fast), and a printer. I think a printer is necessary because you will want to have the luxury of being able to print out your paper right before it is do, and if the only community printers are in the libraries then it will be a pain to have to go all the way over there, especially if there is bad weather. Also, sometimes libraries fill up around finals and you don’t want to have to wait in line just to print.
