I have made my deposit for the college of my choice. My mom thinks that I need to email other colleges that accepted me and inform them that I will not be attending their institution. Is this correct?

Scichem.

If you DO tell them, they can better figure out their yield and some other student may get off the wait list a few days earlier. If you DO NOT tell them, they will figure it out on their own.

The polite thing to do is to let them know. There’s no downside.

My D’s colleges all sent her a post card or card of some kind with a stamped (or postage paid) envelope to return the information. She sent all of them back, and wrote a short note of thanks on a few that were especially hard to turn down. Nice to do since they accepted her… and she also figures that it never hurts to leave on a pleasant note, just in case she decides she wants to transfer there in a year or two! Unlikely, but she figured it couldn’t hurt.

My daughter notified the other schools and sent short thank-you e-mails to her admissions reps.

Yes, most colleges do have some sort of reply card with their admission package. If a college you have been accepted at does not have anything like that I’d suggest you send an email/note/postcard to admissions to let them know your decision.
