Telluride Association Sophmore seminars (TASS)

I just received my letter confirming that I am a finalist for the 2011 TASS program (que happy dance :0) )
So.. I was curious if anyone else received their letter and is as excited as me
What did you write your application essay was on?
Also if any previous TASS alumni could give me any pointers for my interview pertaining to what I should know in advance, dress code, preparation, e.t.c
Thanks in advance

sophomore** oops

hi! i was hoping to find someone else who was a finalist!! i just had my interview and to be honest, it was kind of intimidating because there were 3 interviewers and they were basically drilling me with these hard questions.

for dress, i just wore casual clothes like they told me to: cardigan, jeans, boots

and for my application essays, i wrote about education and frederick douglass

Hi, guys! I got accepted as a TASS Finalist tambien! My interview is in three hours T-T… shiver

HARD Q’s? >_< gosh, I’m really fuzzy about a lot of the books. I hope everything goes well.

For my essays, I wrote about a scene from the book Crime and Punishment, and I talked about the “Lost Boys” from Sudan. :)

P.S. I’m planning on wearing really formal things to the interview… darn~ @jy1231, who told you about the casual-dress-requirement?

Hehe, good luck to you guys!

you said the questions they asked were hard. do you any examples? - i have my interview this weekend and my interviewer has a BA in classics and i have a feeling im going to be drilled on the books–im rly worried i didn’t even think i would get in and for the past hour i have been on CC looking at other post and finally realized just how prestigious this program is

OMG!
Sorry I didn’t respond earlier, I just saw the post today (blame it on my busy scheduele and studying like a maniac for AP’s in May =/)
Well, my interview is on April 9 and honestly I’m only slightly nervous, seeing that I’m familiar with the books I wrote I read as well as my essay topics.
But THANK YOU for the clue in on the dress code, I had no idea we were supposed to dress casually.
@jy1231 What do you mean by hard questions??o.o

p.s. I wrote my app essays on “The Dark I know well” a song from the musical Spring Awakening, and the importance of hair in the Africa American female community( the abundance of perm and relaxed hair, versus natural hair and the origins of this trend as well as the effect it has on the African American community today)
I hope you all do well on your interview, hope to hear from you soon =0)

Oooh, I ended up dressing formal to the interview… hehe, the interviewer was all “t-shirt” and I was all “dress clothes”…> <;

For me, there was only one interviewer, and none of the questions he asked were about the books at all. He just asked me lots of questions “about me.” -_- And I was stressing about the Portrait of a Lady!

Overall, the interview was really friendly and nice. Good luck on yours, guys!

By the way, does anyone know the total number of TASS applicants/finalists? I know about thirty-something people get to attend at the end~~

Hahaha, @bluefish95, same! It wasn’t until I searched TASS on collegeboard that I found out about its prestige. 'Tis an awesome site, no? :)

lml at the dress clothes and you only had one interviewer, lucky xD, and really they asked you about yourself =0)
Thats pure awesomeness, because I’m here bugging out about knowing all my info from my essays
Which college/ uni did you want to go to?

ahhh! sorry for not replying. i’ve had quarterlies all week :(

about the casual dress, i asked my interviewer when i was talking to him. it shouldn’t matter at all though. i saw the girl who was interviewed before me in a nice dress and everything.

i had three interviewers and they hardly asked me any questions about my books. i thought they were going to, so i was cramming, trying to reread all of them.

they asked questions like: how would you solve racism? why do you think there’s racism? about women, the middle east. questions where i’m not really certain in my answers. and then when i answered, they would question or find holes in my logic.

overall though, they were very nice and i enjoyed the interview.

@Drawinful. i believe that 18 students are chosen for each program, so 36 total.

hmm… Seems like everyone is basically saying the same thing about the interview questions
the only thing is my interviewer(or at least I think he is) sent me an email saying that I would be interviewed on my essays(" will consist mostly in a conversation about your application, so the best preparation would be to review your application carefully beforehand.") so I’m not sure if I should relax and just get informed on current events or review my essays like a mad person.

On the other hand,I’m glad your interview went well lol =P

Best of luck at your interview! Did you have it yet?

Also, do you know when they’re supposed to get back to us about whether or not we get it?

@jy1231, I think they’re gonna tell us in late April! nervousness 0_0

No my interview is tomorrow =OOO Im nervous

well I made an official 2011 tass page, seeing that the tasp 2011 has competely gone off the roof with replies -.-
anyways this thread is kinda dead now
