@Watermark123: Ditto… PSAT.
How far are you guys on your essays? What awards and activities did you other TASP-ers include on the app?

LOL I have one out of four essays done (the other two are basically lists, I don’t really think they use those for admissions purposes as much).

So much work with DECA reports and job work and arghhhhhhh

Haha sorry about the incessant nagging about the mailed invitations (i think my mom might have accidentally thrown it away) but what did the invitations consist of?

^ it’s just the printout version of the online brochure on TASP apply page ^^;

the essays are killerz o_O spending a lot of time on it over the break and they are still pretty messy. Geez can’t believe the holiday is over already. Wish I had more day off to work on the application. Essays are my only hope, my EC has nothing really special and i don’t have many awards either :(

Same here… though my 2nd essay’s beginning to Sound garbled.

I came across a tasper on the forum who made b’s and c’s in their classes (though apparently he was somewhat of a genius) and others who rushed in their essays so I really wouldn’t worry about the academic/extracurricular portion of the application.

On a side note (I’m getting a little bothered by the amount of stress we’re needlessly putting ourselves through on these applications ) whart are you guys interested in?

What score do you need to get mail from TASP? I had a 233. Shouldn’t that be high enough?

99th percentile in your state - I assume that means you have to get a perfect score, or pretty darn close. People in more rural states can get a bit lower, while if you live in populated/competitive areas like New York or Cali, getting 238~240 is your best bet. But you really don’t need to get the mail to apply, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Is anyone writing their critical analyses on a movie?

^ wow I am! haven’t even started on it yet, though :(

How are you guys showing your own views and thoughts in the interesting topic essay? I’m not sure if I should use first person and directly state my opinions or just let it show through the points that I’m arguing

Leerin- I live in California and I got the email notification even though I only got a 210 (arghh), so their minimum was probably a 200 or something? Idks.

For the crit. Analysis, I wanted to do a song, but I figured it’d be too hard. I’m doing a book instead and I’m not using “I” or anything just arguing my point.

-I’m like reaaally new to CC (yepp, created an account just for tasp. can you say commitment? :D). but anyway, I don’t know how to do stuff on here so forgive me for my inexperience-

9 more days!!! one more essay to go…

Is anyone up for an essay swap? If you are you can just PM either me or Darthead123 (he and I have been contacting each other)

@ awesomeirl and darthead123
I strongly discourage you from swapping essays with anyone online. Have a teacher or a parent or an irl friend look at them.

I’ve already done the conflict and preference essays, and I’m going to try to get the “hopes and plans” and “topic in a field that interests me” essays done today. That will leave me with the book list and the critical analysis…

The Critical Analysis is going to be what ruins me. I don’t even know how to do it or what to do it about (I’m thinking about using a poem, though!). It has been a long time since I have read a novel outside of school - I wish I could write a unique (as in not a school assignment) analysis of a book that I read in school…

@vivendium
Same here… I don’t know if I’ll even be using cc aside from this x)

I only recently heard about TASP, so that’s 6 essays to do in a week? Yeah, there goes any chance I had, but I’m still hoping :P

I’ve got a few questions about the essays that maybe some of you might be able to answer.

First of all, are we allowed to do our analysis on something we read outside of school and then later read in school? I really want to do my analysis on Hamlet, which we recently read in my English class but I actually read it over summer first because I was personally interested in it. (I have a habit of doing things like that. I did the same thing for Romeo and Juliet; we read it in class in 9th grade but I read it in the spring of my 8th grade year). Does the fact that I read it in school after-the-fact disqualify me from using it in my essay? I emailed TASP about this over winter break from the “Request Information” section of the website but naturally they have not replied. :(

Secondly, for the topic of interest essay, I’m confused as to how one writes an effective argumentative essay without making it resemble a research paper. In my case, I’ve done a lot of research about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and basically I want to argue in my essay that the US is on the wrong side of the issue. But in order to back up this opinion wouldn’t I have to include historical facts, statistics, etc.? Where do we draw the line between “factually-supported opinion paper” and “research paper?”

@ WynterSunThe lines drawn when you express your opinion/viewpoints concerning the topic of interest. A typical research paper is free of a biased opinion; basically, unlike the TASP topic of interest paper, you’d stray from using first person pronouns

I see. So basically as long as I make an argument I should be fine?
