Telluride Association Summer Programs (TASP) 2016

How is everyone approaching the second and third essay prompts? I’m struggling coming up with topics to write about for both prompts…For the second one, are you guys writing solely based on your opinion or also including research? And what types of topics are people thinking of writing about?

I’m probably going to write something mainly opinion-based, but also supported by facts; you always need ethos, logos, and pathos. It would be difficult to write a 1500 word essay of just opinion. As for topics, I’m thinking about either politics, feminism, science, or education (maybe a combination of some).

^ I, too, was going to write about feminism for the “social issue” prompt, but I felt that it was too cliche and changed my topic entirely :frowning: I’m unsure if they want facts to support it though, as IDK it seemed to me they wanted more of a personal philosophy paper? At least that’s what I’m going for :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m planning on writing about the Armenian genocide for my social issue prompt. Even though I have no relationship with Armenia in any way (I’m African-American), doing an essay on it last year in English class really opened my eyes to the double standard that America sets for war crimes and it’s become something I’m really passionate about. It’s a shame that most history classes around the US don’t even mention the plight of the Armenians when discussing World War I.

I have a lot of stuff to talk about for prompt #3…that’s means that I’m a pretty bad person I guess…

I’ve chosen all of my topics but I can’t seem to figure out a way to start without seeming contrived/contained.

(Lurker turned newbie here)
How are you guys going to answer the prompt that asks what you why you want to join TASP? I’m scared that my answer will be too generic/cliche.
January is turning out to be very stressful…

@nullisecunda You’re not alone. I never know what to answer for those types of questions X_X

At least you have an engaging prompt for your social issue prompt. Mine is so generic lol :((((

Quick question, can anyone login to their account TASP’s webpage? I keep seeing an “this webpage is under construction”

Wow those are such interesting topic ideas  Question: is everyone filling up the entirety of the 1500 word limit? I’m having trouble writing over even a 1000…

I’m at 1100 and leaving it @peetachips

I have around 900 words for prompt 3 (the only essay I have written so far), but since my incident is really simple I didn’t feel the need to elaborate too much. those words get the point across. Idk now I’m a bit nervous

Remember that word count limits (in this case, the upper range) are only there to keep essays from being too verbose.

@nullisecunda I can log in. Try it again perhaps?

It looks like I’m going to finish my application the night before… Are you guys citing any sources for the second prompt?

Well, I still havent started the second prompt, but I think I’m gonna make a huge effort to not create a works cited. BTW how many things are in your guys booklist? The word limit shuts me down at 6-7 items. How about with you guys?

@CanisMajor oh no really?? And here I was planning on including things like music and art in addition to books!

@Ciella I am just calling it a booklist cause I lack a better term for it. In my list I have 4 books and 2 nonbooks so far.

@peetachips That is my problem…I’m writing on a social issue and I need to cite sources :’) I’m thinking of changing my topic. @CanisMajor I wrote everything before I got into my account and I regret it, since I based my essay on word count and not character count. I have to remove around 2500 characters for my booklist alone. Joyyyy…

@CanisMajor Oops. I have a list of around 15 things right now… RIP.
Also for second prompt, I’m just doing personal thinking/philosophy… I didn’t want to choose a current event because of too much work-- personally, I’d rather write something about my developed perspectives on something (pft ain’t nobody got time to cite sources). :stuck_out_tongue:
