Temple Honors College

Hi there! I was just wondering if any prospective/current Temple Honors College students could possibly tell me a bit about the program, since I haven't been able to find many threads about it. How is the Honors College different from/better than Temple proper? Are the classes small and challenging? How are the housing and the social life? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

here’s a link to information about the honors college. Among the benefits of honors colleger are honors housing, honors classes and honors advising.

Have you already been accepted to the honors program?

I haven’t been accepted (I don’t think Temple decisions come out until at least March), but my scores nearly match the program’s averages and my mom works at Temple so I’m fairly optimistic that I’ll get in.

actually Temple decisions are rolling – so you should hear well before March --in fact we visited in early October and at the admissions presentation they said that students who had already applied would be reviewed starting in October and that they should get a decision by Thanksgiving. Decisions are posted online before you receive your letter, so you might try checking your TU Portal to see if your decision has been posted.

Since your mom works at Temple, she may be able to connect you with people who are either students in, or professors/advisors for, the honors program. It does not seem that any current Temple students post on this board, so it is hard to get questions answered here. Post back if you find out more, I would be interested to hear what you learn about the Honors program. And good luck on your application!

The Honors Program at Temple is awesome. I’m a freshman and I just got done my first semester, and I absolutely loved being in Honors. For starters, the number one advantage that Honors students have is priority registration. We get first pick (along with graduate students) of what classes to take. I was able to choose my classes an entire month before a lot of my friends who weren’t in Honors. Along with that, you have the advantage of having the honors advisers. You don’t have to make an appointment to see them, and you’re able to visit them at almost any time in the Honors Lounge. They also take the time to get to know you, which is something that the other advisers who have to deal with thousands of other students can’t really do. You also have the advantage of having honors classes. The honors classes are a lot smaller than most other classes offered, which allows for more hands-on teaching/learning with smaller and more involved discussions. I’ve heard different things about how challenging the honors classes are compared to the non-honors classes. I guess it depends on the course and professor. As far as housing and social life, you have the benefit of having a guaranteed spot (as long as you send in the application on time) in the Honors LLC in 1300. In my opinion, 1300 is the best dorm on campus, and anyone who chooses not to live there is foolish. Living in the Honors LLC allows you to live with and meet so many people who are like you in the fact that they’re all intelligent, hard working, and care about their schoolwork. You can spend time hanging out or studying, and it’s always fun. I know that in my hall alone there are 4 other people who have the same major as me. If you get accepted into the Honors Program you should definitely take part in it because it’s honestly really worth it.
