Temple Honors College

So, I've got the stats and profile to get into colleges far more selective than Temple, but I like the place a lot; it looked great during my visit, it's giving me full tuition plus three $4,000 stipends automatically, and I've heard the internship opportunities are great thanks to Temple's massive alumni network.

Ultimately, what might be the dealbreaker for me is how the honors college works. I'm aware that I'd get to choose my classes a month before everyone else, receive admission into one of the nicest dorms on campus, and have a special academic advisor... but that's all a bunch of brochure-ish nonsense.

It's the real experiences that matter most to me, so if anyone here has attended or is currently a part of Temple's honors program, I'd love to hear about how things are going for you. One of the questions nagging at the back of my mind the most is just how many classes you need to take outside the honors program, and how different those classes are (worse teachers, more lecture halls, etc.) from the honors ones... but I appreciate all commentary you're able to share!

I am also very interested in hearing responses to this! Same exact scenario for my daughter, and honestly the free tuition is just too good to not give Temple serious consideration. Would love to hear from current students in the honors program and/or on this scholarship about the options that are available for using the $4,000 stipends.
Many thanks!

Hey Guys,
I’m actually not an honors student myself, but I have many friends who are in the honors program at Temple so I can relay their opinions to you. Honors at Temple is a different experience than the typical Temple experience which is a benefit since it makes typical life better.
Benefits of Honors academically
-Stipends
-Small Class Sizes
-Some of the best professors in the country
-personal adviser
Social Benefits:

  • The honors college always attempts to unite the honors students especially with the LLC
-Honors college host special activities for honors students only

I’m a biology major here at Temple so I will talk about the difference in classes

  • Normal students are also challenged academically even though SAT scores might not reflect this since Temple gives different types of people a chance at an education
-In Biology, the biggest weed-out course known by all Temple Students is Bio1111 (Bio 1). This course has a 70% failure rate due to horrible professors teaching.
-In honors, the course is challenging but you have an amazing professor who actually cares about his students and reaches out to them.

If you have specific questions, feel free to inbox me. I might not respond quickly since I have finals coming up in a few weeks.

hey, my son is in similar situation. Has a lot of options but he really likes Temple and it seems like a great fit for him. Deal breaker for him would more likely be if there is a lot of paperwork for stipends or too much bureaucracy across the board and for travelling abroad. if we learn any more specifics, I will post here. Congrats to all! I want to add that one complaint I’ve seen about Temple online are their “mosiac” classes which all students are required to take. The complaint is why, it takes away from taking more classes in their major. However, from what I’ve seen, there is some flexibility as to how those requirements are filled and there are some honors classes which address these requirements.

Thanks for the info from those who responded. Daughter received her official admission letter and scholarship offer in the mail yesterday. She also received a letter from Temple Honors. She has been accepted to Fox School of Business…does anyone know if she will automatically be admitted to the Fox honors program also?
She will most likely choose International Business as her major (she applied as undeclared business). Does anyone have any first hand experience they can share about the Intl Business program? Fox says its in the top 10 for undergraduate Intl Bus programs per US News and World. That sounds pretty impressive, but I’d like hear from students about their experiences, professors, etc.
This scholarship offer is pretty amazing if the program and school are a good fit for the student. Thanks for any info you can share!

I don’t have any real data on Fox school. Scholarship is great; my son just got his letter yesterday too. If you can, visit the campus and I’d contact business dept directly. We contacted profs in my son’s field and they have been very responsive and helpful. As i learn more about honors(not Fox just regular honors), I will let you know. From what I hear, honors dorm is nicest on campus so that’s a plus too and if she has the priority registration, that could be very helpful at the business school. And area surrounding Temple can be dicey so option to stay on campus all 4 years is more valuable than you might think, assuming kids actually stay on campus. i plan to contact honors dept soon to set up visit for the spring semester.

so i’m starting to get a spring semester visit planned with visits to classes, the honors dept, and the honors dorm. it will be kid’s third visit to campus. Will likely be in either Janurary or February. looks more and more everyday like my kid is going to Temple and we are getting excited!! I, and even more so he, are relieved the application and narrowing down college choices is coming to a close and even more grateful to Temple to their genorisity toward my kid and others who are simiarlly situated. What a year narrowing down the colleges…

Good for you and your child!! We are nowhere near a decision yet…Temple is the first acceptance for my daughter. 7 more schools to hear from. I would like my daughter to set up a similar visit this winter and spend some time with the honors staff and students. We will be contacting them soon. I’m still amazed at how generous this scholarship is! One of my daughter’s classmates has already accepted her offer. It was truly a blessing for her as the money just isn’t there for her and her family to consider too many other options. I’m thrilled for her … she’s very deserving of this opportunity!

I’d still love to hear from current students…anybody out there that can share experiences with kids who are considering Temple honors?

Congrats on your acceptances. Sorry I haven’t been able to answer a few of your questions, I’m currently studying for finals. I have scanned through a few questions that I will try answering with my knowledge even though I’m not a business major.

Receiving acceptance to the honors college means that you are accepted into the “honors program of your major” if you declared one while applying to Temple. Fox school of business has been significantly been improving the past few years. My friend received many perks of being an honors business student including getting an IPad, assistance from honors for professional mentors, and etc.
I’m currently taking mosaics so I will take a stab at your question of it limiting courses outside of your major. Mosaics pretty much all depends on your professor to tell you the truth. Some kids find mosaics to be more work that courses from their majors while other likes me average a 1-2 page journal entry every five weeks. I find the GenED program annoying because my interests do not waive gen ed requirements. Honors students are required to take the Honors version of mosaics, but the rest of the classes are flexibility. One of my good friends, who is also a bio major, is taking honors general education classes while taking non-honors major courses. Honors has loads of perks and flexibility. if you inbox me I can answer specific questions after next week.

Following along and appreciate futuredoc’s input.

futueredoc, thanks for input and good luck with finals. i dont’ expect to hear back from u until you’re done, I barely remember how finals were but I was very single focused trying to get best grade (and I 'm sure u are too) and none of us want to take u away from your studies, and thanks again!!!

I’m a senior in the honors college (social sciences / CLA)

Transfers or upperclassmen admitted need 6 honors classes by graduation, those in the program from freshman year need 10. These can be a balance of any classes you want, but you have to take gen eds in the honors program.

CLA requires 123 credits to graduate so this means ~ 15 credits per semester / 8 semesters. Wuld probably be around 35-40 classes total.

Up to two Honors courses can be contracted (which gives xfers like myself a bit of a benefit). If you dnt believe you can meet the requirements you can file a petition to have an amended #/makeup of courses. I contracted 2 upper level courses (entrepreneurship / politics) and took 3 honors geneds and a honors capstone (did this in one school year but my gpa is going to drop a bit).

Contracts can be anything you and the professors decide. (I.e. My entrepreneurship class required us to read a book & present as well as 5 other ten minute presentations on readings; I had to read an extra book and give extra Presentation on the book).

My honors capstone had a 6000 word thesis (22-26 pages, compared to - from what I’ve overheard in the tech center - 10-14 page rage for regular capstones in the same major). Class discussions in geneds have more depth and breath. Temple has focused on recruiting top students and some of the discussions in freshman geneds have been the most enlightening.

You do nit need to take an honors capstone if in university honors to get the honors certificate

Was able to gain research experience under advising of department/honors chair through the program. (also a possibility for departmental honors students in the majors that offer it).

Hope this helps…

P.S. Dwight Carey in fox school is the best professor at temple (yw)

Rest of post below…

Thanks for that info swat. D’s keeping an eye on Temple, she’s a junior now.

No problem ohmomof2

@Agador my ex was in the regular int’l business program and got the job she wanted right out of school. She is doing a leadership rotation program at a major finacial company. She is employed along with peole from Wharton and other top programs.

she mentioned one guy (kind of the poster child) from fox honors who had nearly perfect marks and now works at a big 3 accounting/consulting firm.

My sample size is admittedly anecdotal and small

Temple has been doing a great job of stepping up it’s game to compete for top students and it’s definitely noticeable. (part of the reason many of your kids are begin offered full rides to compete with other top progs)

Best of luck in college decisions to all

Hey so I just received my acceptance on Friday to Temple. I really like the feel of the campus, but whether or not I come here depends on if I get into the honors college. How big exactly is the Honors Program per year? I have a 3.49 GPA and a 1560 SAT, along with 3 800 subject tests and a boatload of extracurriculars. Would I be accepted into the Honors College?

http://admissions.temple.edu/sites/admissions/files/uploads/188_1213_scholarship_info_sheet_sl_2014FINAL.pdf

1560 on 1600 or 2400 scale? i’m guessing 1600 based on your subject tests. assuming 1600 scale, your SAT is well above range for honors college. Re GPA, Temple only uses core classes and recalculates your GPA so I’m not sure what it would based on their calculations. The chart link I posted has a lot more details

I was given a Provost’s Scholarship, and was also admitted into the Honors Program. Thanks for the input!

Excellent!!! and congrats!

does anyone have details about the admitted students day on Feb 15th. We can never get into tuportal. Since kid got email about the date, I know it’s one of the admitted students day but that’s it. anyway, if anyone wants to pm me or post with more details about what the agenda is for the admitted students day, i’d appreciate it.
