I’ve been looking at Temple as a safety, but it is only really financially feasible as a safety if I get a generous scholarship. I’ve heard some people say that the Presidential scholarship is guaranteed if you meet the qualifications, but I think that may have changed in recent years or perhaps they were just misinformed. Can someone confirm this? Also, if it is competitive, do they look at ECs as well as stats? I have a 36 ACT, 4.3 W GPA (not sure about UW, my school doesn’t report), and my ECs include playing piano for 11 years, being a NSLI-Y summer finalist, and being class president for the past two years, among some other assorted clubs/volunteer work/generic stuff. Fairly strong, not outstanding though. Do I have a good chance?
To the best of my knowledge they only look at stats (GPA and test scores). However, one of the things we realized about Temple scholarships is that they don’t take your GPA as calculated by your school. My son’s weighted GPA (including only core academic courses) was enough to earn the Presidential Scholarship but Temple re-calculated his GPA to being out of 4.0 scale which brought it down several scholarship levels.
^ that’s right. They calculate the GPA to their own formula (they weight APs maybe not honors and such, but they also take out non-core grades) but if you are over, and have the scores, it’s guaranteed.
