Hello,

Until now I have been encouraging S to focus on LACs rather than art schools. Two reasons:
1) financial aid is usually very limited at art schools and we are 0 EFC
2) he has always talked about double majoring in math, his other passion.

LACs seem to suit him more because of their smaller size and higher student/prof ratio.

Weighted GP 100 (frshman, sophomore and current junior year)
Sophomore PSATs 1400 CR + M
10 APs by graduation, 2 of them self-studied

However...a smaller setting within a university might also be wonderful? We visited Brown/RISD where we heard about the dual degree program and he loved the idea of serious art combined with serious academics, and he loved the idea of a core group of peers within a larger university setting.

Yale and Brown and Williams and Pomona and Wesleyan and Cornell and some of the smaller LACs sound wonderful...but they are all reaches, just for the sheer fact of low acceptance rates.

Which brings me to my point. As I see S and how serious he is about pursuing art, maybe his safeties/matches should include more universities with strong art rather than LACs which are higher ranked but do not have the faculty or facilities or the critical mass of students who are passionate about art. Carnegie Mellon is on the radar but we are not sure about financial aid.

What do parents/students know of Temple ? They have a Pres scholarship which sounds like a full scholarship andto be honest I am very impressed with the faculty credentials. Why haven't I thought of this before? Is there a reason? Is there a reason not to? The Honors program is about 1,500 kids -- the size of a LAC. Would he be able to be in the honors program through Tyler? Finally, I don't see a dual degree like Cornell's where you can cross-reg between schools within the university, getting both a BA and BFA. Right?

Thanks!

Hi,

I’m sorry to say I don’t know tons about Temple/Tyler, but I have a friend attending so I’ll offer what I have. Yes, you can be in both honors and the art school (you get some choice regarding dorm options, etc.) You can double major, but I don’t think there’s a dual-degree option; also, the art students take nearly all art classes at least freshman year (my friend’s taking 3 studio art classes, art history, and English).

Note also that she chose Tyler over SAIC (partially because of finances); if he’ll be going on to grad school, that’s even more years of college to be covering. The nice thing about a university is that there’s more options in case he decides something is/isn’t for him, also.

Thanks cacondor! Good to hear that honors and art can go hand-in-hand. I didn’t see anything about a dual degree either but on the other hand he could always do a BA in art hiistory and a BFA in painting/drawing or sculpture. It looks like the highest scholarship is a full tuition scholarship, not sure how we would cover room and board. But the art history dept faculty in particular looks really impressive – even has a PhD – and the faculty in general have great credentials. Thanks agin for your reply.

It’s full tuition plus summer stipends. You might see if they will stack his Pell and any other federal or state need-based grants (or outside scholarships for that matter), if so that would cover a lot of room and board and a small loan could do books/supplies/the balance of R&B.

Temple is on D’s list as well, though for engineering/honors. She spent a week there last summer and enjoyed it.

OHMom, thanks – I haven’t done the net price calc, but that is because I am not sure if it would reflect actual grants because of the full tuition scholarship. Pell would help and a small loan would not be the end of the world. Thanks very much.

I think it might have to be an email to Temple to ask how they handle it. The NPC seems unnecessary given the automatic tuition+stipends and full Pell you already know hell get. If there is SEOG or a state grant involved that might affect things but probably not a lot.

I feel like I’ve read that the Pell is always stacked though if used for R&B is taxable, if the student earns enough to have to pay taxes. But I’m not 100% sure.
