Temple University Class of 2025 Discussion Thread

Can’t speak to the CS major in particular other than to say that internships/job prospects would certainly be more abundant in Philly, but that’s not a reason to choose one over the other. Keep in mind majority of kids change majors at least once.

I would just setup visits at both to help him decide, as they are very different campuses, with Temple being in the city and one of the great things about it is that the regional rail and subways are right there and most students do venture out to other parts of the city for restaurants etc on weekends. Temple is doing in person tours now. They say on their website that they are not for admitted students but we signed up anyway (my daughter was accepted and narrowed her choices down to Temple and Pitt). While you can’t go into dorms or many of the buildings they will bring you into the new library and some other spots.

Don’t let the drive into campus fool you - the surrounding neighborhood on the way is very bad, but crime on/near campus is not, and the area outside of the primary campus is predominantly student rental housing so it’s pretty safe.

FWIW - my daughter, after her second visits to both TU and Pitt, decided on TU. Main reasons were:

  • Campus - while the Cathedral of Learning at Pitt is awesome and the campus is nice, she preferred Temple’s campus much more.
  • City - she really wanted to attend a city school
  • Study Abroad program at Temple is very good and pretty popular, with the Rome campus in particular being something she wants to definitely attend.

While I gave her the choice, I was relieved that she chose TU because there also was a pretty big price difference. Pitt’s offer did not include any merit and so $31k, Temple is going to be $24k ($29k - $5k scholarship). This is for tuition/fees/room+meal plan. Depending on her eventual major (she’s going in Undecided) the price will likely go up $1k to $2k per year but still a good bit less expensive.

Good luck with your son’s decision!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this information and viewpoints!

hi! for people that got accepted and are doing pre-med: does your portal say that you’re doing pre-med along w your major? bc i checked off pre-med when i applied but it doesn’t say it on my portal or anything

In general, there is no premed major and you checked off the “premed” activity, not the major.

My D also applied to TU as Biology major as part of her premed’s intended track and the portal and the acceptance letter doesn’t mention “premed” at all.

I think the COA for Temple is about $34K for instate.

TUITION: $19,944.00
UNIVERSITY SERVICES FEE: $890.00
HOUSING: $9,072.00
MEAL PLAN: $4,126.00
ESTIMATED TOTAL: $34,032.00

If you go with the same items listed above: Pitt’s COA should be around: $32K/yr.

The tuition varies by major. My D is Undeclared and current year’s tuition is just over $16k per year for Undeclared (i.e., University Studies: Undeclared) majors. TU says 2021 rates won’t be known until July.

Also - keep in mind the financial award letter uses the high end housing and meal options, which adds a few thousand more. Most freshman would opt to stay at one of the lower cost dorms over Morgan or Temple Towers.

anyone else still waiting on an application put on hold back in january? not sure if this is a bad sign or not?

Not sure if this is the place for this, but I just committed (yay!) and the housing is very confusing. I filled out my housing application, and every time I go to choose my housing, it says that I don’t have a room selection time slot and that I can choose once the online general selection process opens. I thought general selection was supposed to open April 1, and I can’t find anything about this anywhere. I’ve heard if you don’t act quickly, you don’t get good housing, and I really want to beat that. Does anyone have any info or advice? Thanks!

Housing selection times are issued based on when you submitted your housing deposit. The 1st time slots were issued for April 1. If you just submitted you will have a later date/time (most likely April 8 or later).

Oh, okay, that makes sense. Thank you so much!

Were you able to get a selection window and find housing? My son committed and submitted his application on April 6th. He’s waiting for the email about his window. I’m seeing various things on other social media from students saying there are no spots left. Someone said the only rooms open were a few spots left at Temple Towers (thought that was for upperclassmen). I can’t imagine that’s true b/c it’s still early. I was told housing was guaranteed for freshman as long as the app was in May 1st.

Apparently, more housing opens up on May 1. I ended up getting an email a few days later with a selection time for next week, and I’ve been seeing on social media that a decent amount of housing is still available.

Thank you so much. I was getting confused that housing selection was closed until May 1st and then opened up again. I think you are saying that he will get his window soon and that he can pick before May 1st and if he’s not happy with the availability then come back after May 1st and more rooms will be open? I really appreciate this. He’s not on any of the social media and I’m much more worried about this than he is

We received email from Temple with additional merit - Conwell scholarship.

It’s too late now since daughter already committed to in-state UMD. Overall, We were a bit disappointed the way Temple’s “SLOW” admission process. One of the example is we received the scholarship’s email last week but TU portal still hasn’t updated yet.
