Tennessee Student at Vandy?

Hello,

I am a high school senior in Tennessee. I have already been accepted to the University of Tennessee Knoxville, but I was wondering what my chances might be at Vanderbilt. I am a white male living in a middle class household. I would not bring racial or geographical diversity to Vanderbilt.

Best single ACT:
Composite: 34
Math: 35
Science: 35
English: 33
Reading: 33
Writing: 8
English Combined: 30

Superscore ACT:
(I know Vandy does not superscore, but here it is for the sake of it.)
Composite: 35
Math: 35
Science: 36
Reading: 35
English: 33

Unweighted GPA: 4.00
My school does not provide rank or weighted GPA. Whenever possible, I have taken AP and/or Honors courses. This year, I am currently on track to have 4 blocks of AP and 1 block of dual enrollment (out of 8 blocks in a complete school year).

AP European History (10th grade): 4
AP Chemistry (11th grade): 5
I am taking AP Calculus AB now, and next block, I will take AP Physics.

Dual Enrollment Composition I: 97/A
Dual Enrollment Composition II: currently in progress

Traveling & High School Soccer (traveling team in the fall, high school team in the spring)

9th, 10th, and 11th Grade Class President (did not run in 12th grade)

Student School Board Representative - I sit on the board as a representative from the high school. I provide a younger perspective, and I relay information from my peers to board members and the Director of Schools (and visa versa).

Team Captain of a team which builds single-person vehicles for a super mileage competition in Indianapolis (basically like an Engineering team)

Started a small business with a friend which makes websites for small businesses

I was a political volunteer during the 2012 Elections

Active in Church Youth Group

USSF Soccer Official (for several years)

Volunteered at local charity proving wood to impoverished families and individuals, and I also led a team which produced a short documentary/promotional video (we used a GoPro and two professional tier Cannon video cameras from our HS film class)

What are my chances for Regular Decision at Vanderbilt, and as a side note, what are my chances for merit-based scholarships (e.g. Chancellor's Scholarship) at the University of Tennessee? I would love to pay as little as possible.

Thanks,
jptech7

How rigorous is your HS? If your school has sent kids to Vandy in the past, I think you have a good chance. Regardless, a 34 will put you in the ballpark.

Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship is tough, those kids tend to get into HYP but you have great scores so it doesn’t hurt to apply. Also, Vanderbilt gives very generous aid so you will likely get a good package just getting in. You should also apply to some other elites known for giving good FA money.

My school does not offer as many AP courses as some on these forums (like the people that take 10 AP course… not really possible). It is difficult to even schedule APs. Everything results in a conflict.

What other colleges should I maybe send an application to? I am already accepted to UT Knoxville, so I have a good safety. Preferring to stay in the South, what are my options? Duke?

I have not taken the SAT or any SAT II Subject tests, so that alone probably puts me out of the running at several top tier schools. However, I am content with UT Knoxville. It is cheaper, and being in-state for me, I get ~$6,000-7,500 per year in lottery HOPE scholarships automatically. At Vanderbilt, I would also get the same lottery money which would help offset some of the enormous cost.

Thanks for the reply.

For some schools, you can use ACT instead of SAT II subject tests. I would apply to all the southern elites and just see what happens - Duke, Vandy, Davidson, W&L, UVA, Wake Forest, Tulane. Maybe Rhodes so you can get the lottery money.

Sometimes private schools can work out to be cheaper due to generous financial aid. Some private school will throw money at you with a 4.0/34 ACT.

Either way, UT seems to be a good deal so you have nothing to lose.
