Take a look at my post that deals with my visit to Carnegie Mellon. It is found in the CMU area. I have posted the average GPA and SATs for each CMU school. Your SATs are a bit low as is your GPA. You may get in because what I have posted are medians, but if you do, you will be in the bottom 20% or so.

taxguy - does paying full help? do u think my stats are bad enuff to be rejected - or is it possible that I mite be deferred to the regular pool and then get in? I also heard Tepper takes alot of kids from ED pool...CM generally prefers ED applicants and takes em even if their stats are a little below avg---is this true? Thanks.

Yes, If you apply ED and note that you don't need financial aid, I think it will help your chances. CMU takes a relatively high percentage of their kids from ED. Thus, if you apply ED, you will certainly be increasing your chances. However, even so, I would prefer if you could get about 40-50 points more on the SAT to have a better chance.

Taxguy - I would take it again but it would be my fourth time taking it. on the first one i got 1160 2nd one 1270 3rd one i dropped to 1250 (would dropping towards the end influence their decision or they just blindly look at highest one), but nevertheless i have signed up for a one in december---should i just go ahead and take it for the 4th time???---i think i can break a 1300 but im just a really bad test taker. In case i mess up, will the colleges know i took it the 4th time if i dont send my updated scores to any college? Thanks.

What was your highest score for the math on all 4 tests, and what was the highest verbal score? The reason that I ask is that CMU will use the highest on all test for each math and verbal.

I think you will be fine! My D got in to Mellon College of Scie with a 1290 and had similar EC's as you. She did have a higher GPA however..... She is finding it challenging to say the least. But I think you have a really GOOD chance. Have faith and don't worry too much about those SAT's. Keep up your senior grades and you will be fine. GOOD LUCK!

highest was 670 M 600 V

and i didnt take the 4th one yet i was asking you if i should in december. Thanks

thank you sgiovinc1, i really appreciate it. Good luck to your daughter.

Take in December just to show you are still trying....you will be fine. CMU likes all those AP's.

i have also applied/applying to the following schools.

Boston College (Caroll school of business) - Early action

Regular Decision
Fordham Business School
NYU (CAS - i know i wont get into stern so wont even try)
Syracuse (Whitman Business School)
Wake Forest
Georgtown NW and U of Chicago just for the hell of it HAHA
Boston U's business school (4got name)
George Washington's business school (4got name)

im not worried about safeties - i KNow the SUNY's will prolly take me at the worst..although that will be my last resort

any other school u think i should add? - I would like to stay on the east coast and would prefer a school taht offers direct admission into the business school

and also what do u think of my chances to each of the schools i listed? THANKS

Can't help with the others......only CMU.....sorry. Let me know which schools you get into ....I am now your SECOND mom!

sgiovinc1 - thank you for being so concerned. Do you know if there are a lot of New Yorkers at CMU? Im from the Forest Hills area.

Does Interview affect admissions process? I dont think i will have a chance to be interviewed. Was your daughter interviewed? if so, how did she feel about it?

anyone else on my chances?

anyone?????

Well, Tepper is harder to get into than Mellon College of Science (MCS). I'm sure you know you're about 100 points below Tepper avg SAT and grades are a little low too, but I think you are in the ballpark. Since CMU does not guarantee to meet 100% of aid you may have a slight advantage paying full fare although I don't think they would admit it. Overall I'd say it's a slight reach for you, definitely should apply.
An interview won't make or break you but it does show interest in the school, as of course does applying ED, although traditionally CMU is not a big ED school.
And yes there are a lot of New Yorkers at CMU.

Since you asked, my opinion:
georgetown, NW, Uchicago: definite reach
NYU, Tepper, BC: lesser reach
Wake Forest: reach/match
Fordham, GW, BU, Syracuse: prob in

Overall a good list, esp with SUNY safeties.

2331clk...according to recent statistics for current entering freshmen..I might be wrong..but Tepper was EASIER to get into that MCS. FIrst most difficult was SCS (COMP SCIE) then MELLON COLLEGE SCIENCE then CIT (ENGINEERING) in that order this past year. That is so far what I know..but I could be wrong about ADMIT rate.
