Hey all,
I'd just like to know a general bit about transferring out of a second school. I started out at a UMass school, and ended up either Failing (due to attendance and missing drop dates) or withdrawing almost all of my courses. Most of this was due to lack of interest in the school and program (Econ)

Now I'm in my third semester at a CC, as an engineering major. My GPA is 3.77 weighted, and will graduate with my AS in the spring.

My main question is how heavily do schools look back at transfer applicants who have multiple schools? How much will doing sub-par at my first school affect my performance at this school?

My primary school(s) of choice, if it matters, are USC, GA Tech, and UM.

Thanks!

You will just have to explain your situation. I don’t think they will heavily weigh your first semester of college if you’re doing fine at your current school. Were you only at your UMass school for a semester or a whole year?

I was there for three semesters, but only successfully completed 4 classes.

Oh. I would recommend that you talk to an advisor about that. Were you on academic probation or did you just decide to leave?

I was not on probation or suspension. At the time I left because of financial hardships (though disinterest was a huge reason too.)

I did speak to a rep from UMass Lowell, who said that (as far as their school was concerned) the weight of a previous school was minimal compared to current school. Most of the F’s and withdraws were from non-major classes, that I’ve retaken at this point and received A’s.

The best advice my current advisor has given me is to just emphasize my current in-major performance, to focus on strengths not dwell on weaknesses. Yes, it’s good advice, I was just looking around to see if anyone had or had heard of previous experiences.

Thanks for all of the input!!

I was in the same boat. I went to GMU right out of high school and even though I did well in most of the classes, I got two F’s and stopped going after a year. I went to CC and did really well and was just accepted to JMU for this Spring. They look more at what you are doing now and not what happened in the past. You should be fine.
