I'm currently going into my Senior year of high school. Basically, I had a lot of personal problems that caused me to miss a lot of school Junior year. I also had completely overwhelmed my schedule and overestimated how much I could handle. Because of this I ended up doing VERY poorly.

I took all APs and ended up with a 2.0 GPA junior year. I got straight A's my freshman and sophomore year and went into junior year with a 4.2 GPA. I now have about a 3.5 overall. I will be retaking the classes I failed junior year during senior year to hopefully get a better grade and have it override in my GPA. I also did poorly on most of the AP tests I took. My SAT score is a 2200 though.

I want to go into computer science and managed to get As in all the comp sci courses I took at my school and at a community college. I've got a lot of good extracurriculars, community service, leadership positions, etc... If it weren't for junior year, I'd look pretty good on paper.

My point is, after what happened with my grades junior year, is there still hope for me going to a decent university? If so, what types of schools, that I could probably get into, should I consider applying to? Any help/advice is appreciated.

Unfortunately, colleges prefer high grades in junior year over those in sophomore or freshmen year. However, if you could possibly explain your situation, I think it might help your cause.

Was there any valid reason why your grades dropped, such as illness, illness in family, divorce, etc.? If your answer is just laziness, this will probably do a lot of damage.

Man, and I thought I was ****ed with a “low” junior GPA of 3.3. And I have back surgery to support my case. If you have a legit reason, it might help your case, but that’s a REALLY bad drop to be honest. Try to do as best as you can senior year, try to get some connections, hope for the best. Not much you can do about junior year at this point.

Also, as far as schools, no idea. Going from a 4.2 to a 3.5 is pretty rough. Maybe Syracuse and the likes, anything with like a 37-60% acceptance rate.

Don’t worry there are several schools which would still be glad to have you. Find ways to explain your situation in your college essays and apply to feasible schools.

These are some colleges I’ve been looking at: University of Rochester, Brandeis, BU, Northeastern, Wisconsin-Madison, Syracuse, Bentley, Drexel, Worcester Polytechnic

As for extra curriculars:
Special needs cheer coach (200+ service hours)
Varsity Cheer
Key Club President (500+ service hours, club raised over $5000 total for UNICEF and the Eliminate project)
MUN president
Mock Trial team member (County finalist team)
Surfrider Club - class rep
Key club division newsletter editor (representing 10 schools)
Summer internship w/ Electrical Engineering company
Develop applications & create websites in my spare time

Don’t forget, colleges still require your first semester grades of your senior year! Do your best to try and get as high of a gpa as possible then and maybe it will level out a bit. Good luck!

The schools you listed are not particularly selective. I think you still have a chance at most of them provided you are able to convince the adcom that something very serious did indeed happen.

BuBBLES hit the nail on the head, really. You’re not aiming too too high, so I think if there was a legitimate reason for the drop and the colleges are willing to listen they’ll understand and forgive the drop to a point.
