TERRIBLE standardized scores

Well, I suppose I should clarify. (Sorry I didn't do so sooner... I think that caused much of the chaos.) I actually spoke with admissions people at Princeton, Notre Dame and U of Michigan. They said the scores were indeed low enough to rule me out... despite my other accomplishments.

That is why I am worried about them.

(Sorry I didn't say that in the beginning. I didn't know this would happen.)

If a 1440 is low enough to immediately rule you out of Michigan you as might as well enroll in a community college

Well, that's the problem now is it not? Besides "working hard...working hard" (sounds like some President), do you have passions? Every single adcom that I've talked to, and every single book that I've read on the process, it says that they are not looking for BWRKs(bright-well-rounded-kids). The top colleges are looking for passion, identity, and dedication. Just let yourself soak through the essays. And you'll be fine. Don't stress. I mean, I know looking at CC can get a kid stressed. But buddy, trust me, the CC'ers are a REALLY REALLY small fraction of the applicant pool...most of the kids that apply to the ivies are like you...

yet another reason why Catch-22 is the man.

I really think you might be exaggerating. I don't see any adcom ever saying that...first of all, they encourage everyone to apply, yes...everyone means the 1300s, 1200s too because, they want the application fee and they want a higher rejection rate. They prolly said, "Well, scores CAN be a deciding factor if you suck at everything else, and we don't see a person besides the boring list of acitivies and these average test scores by average, I mean, seriously, you are an average applicant to the elite*.

and yet another reason why Catch-22 is the man.

you people are ridiculous.....crying about a 1440 in order to get an ego boost

Okay. Thanks for the advice Catch-22. You should be my counselor. Mine was just like, "Well... you can try for more safety schools."

And oh no, they actually did say not to bother, which is why I freaked. I figured, "Man, if they're not even candid about it... it really must be hopeless!"

But okay... I'm glad to know passion does weigh in somewhere. ^_^ I've just always worried about how to show it. Dang, it's so hard trying to compress a human being onto a piece of paper, lol.

UncleJim you are also the man. welcome!

HAHA. I feel like I am getting an ego boost from Johnst. Now, again, let's just relax, and give ourselves a pat on the back for all of the hard work we put into everything over the last four years just so we can fill out an application for a few "selective" colleges and let some stranger judge our whole humanity in a matter of less than ten minutes...extrememly shallow when I put it in context, but, oh well. :)

reason #..damn i lost count.. Catch-22 is the man.. catch-22 I created a thread its somewhere on the first page could you evaluate please! thanks...

Lol. Exactly, Catch-22... that's why I'm spazzing. ^__^ Because it's so shallow. We're all just a bunch of numbers and letters on paper. It's such a freaky thought.

R u sure? When did you call. Be careful who you talk to also. Around this time every year, all of the admissions officers are reading applications. Most of them are only required to go to the admissions office two half days a week to pick up and drop off stuff. So, the person that answered the phone might've been a "first-reader" or some student admissions slave working around the office. The first-readers' jobs are just the numbers...maybe that's why they are so sensitive...but they do not give you any insight into what an actual adcom or selection committee might say or do. The student admissions slave...well...ummm...their main jobs are to open, sort, and copy stuff...so I doubt you heard those words actually out of an mouth of a person who knows...just my 2 cents

yeah and thats basically why some ivies are so up in the air.. they accept some1 and your like wtf but they reject some1 who was basically sure they'd hvae no prob..

Wow... really? I never even knew about the "admissions slaves". I assumed whoever I called was further up the chain. That's certainly hopeful news, then. And yeah, I called pretty recently.

yeah, besides look at the statistics... your SAT in the range for princeton, notre dame and umich...

Omgosh... johnst, exactly! It's so crazy like that! My one friend had like, a 1500-something, was Yearbook editor, top 10, etc... and he didn't get into Cornell when this other Cheerleader who was, like... in the middle of the class did. I don't get it. Maybe she had some other talent I didn't know about. It's all so unpredictable.

yeah probably.. admissions isn't just about SATs.. so you guys think you can evaluate my chances for Nyu stern ed... i got a new thread somewhere in the middle of the first page.. thanks =)

Admissions slaves...funny story, my friend works in an admissions office as part of his financial aid deal...and basically, that's what they do. And, if you called recently, I am pretty sure who ever you talked to have no authority. Because the admissions ppl are now locked up in their homes reading and getting ready to go into Committee for the Early Decision kids (I am one of them). And plus, admissions officers rarely answer phone calls...

Ok, I think a 780 in math indicates you are not a Terrible test take, maybe worse then some of the super geniuses in this forum, but not most ppl. Have faith in yourself, remember there are plenty of great schools out there that aren't super-competitive like the ivies.
