hey guys, I've just been assigned a triple room in Terry Hall for winter quarter and was wondering what it's like to live there. Is being in a triple room too crowded and how are showers and bathrooms shared? If dorming there isn't pleasant I'd rather just commute from home because its cheaper.

commute. I’ve heard it’s awful.

plus, why not save $$ if you can?

Seriously, commute. If you want to live on campus, you can apply for housing in the Spring to see if you get placed in a better living area (more space, etc).

If you take a triple in Terry, it will be pretty crowded. You’ll share 8 showers and a bathroom (not sure the specifics there) with two floors, I believe. I think Terry has coed floors (alternate male/female bathrooms) except the 11th, which is male.

You’ll have a hard time getting your top picks if you apply for housing for Fall though, since all current residents, then incoming freshmen, and somewhere in there probably people with disabilities get priority, then you.

thanks guys, but I just went to check if I can cancel my application and there would be a $500 fee. I think that’s totally ridiculous because they gave me a dorm that’s was dead last on my preferences and a triple when I asked for a double or single. Now I have to pay $500 because they emailed what dorm I was staying in only a couple of days ago , which is way past the deadline for canceling your application without a penalty fee. This is absolutely unfair!

Honestly, I would fight/contest the fee.

Living in a triple actually isn’t that bad. Sacrificing having a double is worth meeting a lot of new people, if you’re into that sort of thing lol. Travelgirl HEARD it was awful, she obviously hasn’t ever been there herself, and speedsolver, the showers really haven’t been an issue. There have only been 1-2 occasions where the showers were full the whole year, which required me to wait like 2 minutes. If you haven’t already withdrew your application, ask me anything about Terry.

yeah…never lived in terry.
and it’s also a personality thing…I like people and all, but I wouldn’t want to live with 2 other people in a tiny room. I need my space. Not my cup of tea… I could see though how others might like that atmosphere though

As someone who actually lives in Lander/Terry, I would definitely recommend dorming. Sure, the living situation isn’t ideal. No one wants to share a room with two other people, the bathrooms aren’t the cleanest, and the food isn’t incredible. Living in the dorms though, is about the overall experience.

Terry rooms are decently sized and you will get used to living with your two roommates/eventually become friends with them. I consider myself a fairly germophobic person, but I quickly got used to sharing the bathroom with a bunch of other guys within the first week. In general, people are respectful of the bathroom cleanliness. The food isn’t bad, but gets very boring and repetitive after a while. At least it’s conveniently right down stairs.

If you are looking to make tons of friends and get involved at UW, I strongly believe that dorming is the superior option to commuting.

EDIT: In regards to crowded showers, I actually have not had to wait for one any time this year and I shower at all different times. My roommate has only had to wait once.
