Testudo FinAID "My Budget"

UMD hasnt given me an award package yet, but under the My Budget section, it says

TOTAL NEED $35,643.00
UNMET NEED $27,643.00

im just curious, since theres a $8000 gap between total need and unmet need, could this possibly mean that ive received a $8000 scholarship?

I'd say it means you're expected to magically find $8,000.

No, it means you're supposed to magically find 27,643 dollars.
I don't know where the 8000 came from. Are you a BK scholar by any chance?

My budgets not up yet, so I can't tell you what it would look like if you got a scholarship.
All that's up there is a link to an application for a PLUS loan...yeah right.

what do you mean by magically find 27,643 dollars you mean there gona make me pay that much a year?

and im not sure about the BK scholar.. i thought they release scholarship decisions with your financial aid award

hmmm. curious. I hope for you that it means you're getting $8K!!!

We did the FAFSA early (several days before the deadline) and were selected for FAFSA verification, and promptly sent everything in. According to USPS.com, they received everything 2/25 in College Park. I sent an email last week via the "contact us" link, and they got back to me on Thursday and verified that they have received everything. As of today, her status still shows they are awaiting the receipt of the documents we were supposed to mail in. How difficult is it to update the status?!! I know this office must be overwhelmed, but I'm just a bit nervous that somone's not looking at her file because some low-paid worker hasn't updated the stupid screen and they think we haven't sent the stuff in. (the screen says that all consideration is stopped until they receive the documentation). Arg.

Mine said documents missing until today, and I think I sent things in back in January so I really don't think it's anything to worry about.

And BK scholars know already, that's why I asked. I'm guessing that's how much you have to come up with because it says "unmet" need. How is your need greater than the out of state costs?

Last year we found out about my son getting the Presidents Scholarship on Testudo. It clearly said President's Scholarship $8,000 on a line item underneath the Stafford Loans they were offering him. I'd say wait a little longer until everything is updated, and it should become clear.

ohh ok, i thought scholarship decisions were released with financial aid award packages so yeah i guess im not a BK scholar

and the total cost of attendance is 37,437 for an out of state student

The site says 36K, but either way I was wrong. I was probably thinking of a different school.

Oooh, oops. Yeah, I meant to say magically find $27,463. I thought the $8,000 was "unmet" need. I misread. It doesn't look good, though o.o

My daughters budget is similar to yours NYC. Only there is a $5,000 gap, which doesn't make any sense because she did get a scholarship for $3,500 from the college. So, I would say until they actually have put up the award, just ignore anything it says.

I just checked again, and now the budget isn't even there anymore. So, they probably got a bunch of calls from people wanting to know.

Sometimes I think people put stuff on websites without realizing how much anxiety it can cause a person. :-) Of course, then the phone starts ringing off the hook and they realize they just made a bunch of extra work for themselves.

Yeah i hope so usafadad, i definitely need the aid though

does anyone know how UMD is with out of state aid usually? my parents EFC is 2000 so even if i am out of state i am still expecting a somewhat generous award

nyc - I think what you are going to find at UMD (not from experience, mind you) is the same as you will find at most BIG public schools. Especially if you are OOS.

You will get the pell grant with an EFC that low. You "might" get a general scholarship if they have such a thing, but that is hit and miss at differenct schools. Then there might be some other small grants, but the rest will likely come in the form of loans. Most "state" grants/funds are reserved for their in-state students.

Of course UMD could be totally different, but you will know soon enough anyway.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out. My D's budget shows a $2,000 difference in total need and unmet need.

COST OF ATTENDANCE (COA) $XX,XXX.XX
EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) $XX,XXX.XX

TOTAL NEED $9,838.00
UNMET NEED $7,838.00

EDIT//

Found my way to the page with a little help from OIT, and discovered that my package "has not been created...

//

Where is the My Budget section? I am stuck in the Decisions Page and cannot find anything else. Thanks!

It is located here - https://www.sis.umd.edu/fastat/

You will need to create a UMD ID (not the same thing you used to check your decision status/apply).

Anyone else with any info on the My Budget page? They finally recorded all the documents as "received" for the fin aid verification, so that D has a "budget" page. there's currently a $5k difference between Total Need and Unmet Need for her, like USAFA2011dad's daughter's showed.....

No budget yet for my S....and no additional documents requested.

Well, at least you weren't chosen for FAFSA verification then (since no add'l documents requested!!!)

I called them today. They were not very specific. They just said that if there was a difference, then it most likely meant there was something already that they knew about that was making up the difference (scholarship, grant, etc...) but since there is no award letter yet, it is not being listed.
